[I’ve had WW2 pilots tell me they could smell Africa from 100 miles out at 20,000 feet.]

Back in 1951 I was on an aircraft carrier on its way to Korea. When we were three days away from Japan I came onto a weather deck and asked another guy, “What’s that smell?”

He said, “That’s Japan.”

It smelled like shit and sandalwood.
