Senators on verge of bipartisan immigration deal

A bipartisan group of senators appears to be on the verge of clinching a deal on immigration, signaling an agreement could be released as soon as Thursday.

"We've got this bipartisan group. We are at a deal. ... It's the only game in town," Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told reporters.

Asked what was the biggest remaining hurdle, Flake pointed to a border security package "and what's sufficient. That's what we're working on but we've pretty much got a bill."

A spokesman for Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) immediately downplayed Flake's comments, noting the group of senators were close but did yet have an agreement.

"We are extremely close to a strong bipartisan deal to help dreamers. However, nothing is final yet and there is no legislative text to share yet," the spokesman said.

The group of senators — which also includes Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) — have been negotiating for months on a deal that would include a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Their agreement is expected to include legalization for DACA recipients and a border security package, as well as deal with changes to the State Department's diversity visa lottery program and family-based immigration

I’m amazed that Trump said what he said about this group of Senators. Flake has been more vocal about his dislike of Trump than the Dems involved in this.

I feel safe in saying that most Americans have had their ration of blowhard BS from lame ducks like Flake.

Yes, and its the usual pipe dream for RINOs but the usual suspects on the other side are still playing Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football!

RINOs will always gladly play Charlie Brown pretending the enemies on the other side playing Lucy will NEVER EVER let poor ole Charlie have that football.

Voters need to get a clue: any Senator, Representative with an R in front of it that is part of any "Gang of....." and chants "caring for the DACA kids or Comprehensive Immigration Reform,' is YOUR enemy NOT your FRIEND and needs a new day job!!!!

They are all the rotten apples that spoil the entire barrel!

I figured that the rough basis for a deal was there behind the scenes for a long time. The devil is always in the details, which will probably be determined by how much leverage there really is behind the scenes.

We will still have to wait and see what comes out in the final deal, after all this jockeying.

It looks like something will likely be finalized as part of the Budget/Government shutdown issue that comes back to a head next week (19th). If so, Trump’s visit to the wall prototypes after his first State of the Union address, will be a ribbon cutting for the construction phase. In return, he will release some of the DACA hostages that he took for leverage.

As long as Stephen Miller is on Trump’s staff, I’m not concerned about a sellout. That said, the Senate cabal putting the deal together are all amnesty supporters. Flake is trying to stampede the deal thru. Won’t work.
