Congressional negotiators are closer than is publicly acknowledged to finalizing an immigration deal that would codify legal protections for undocumented minors while giving President Donald Trump some tangible victories of his own.
The deal, which is largely being forged in the Senate, still faces major hurdles; chief among them a healthy skepticism by conservativesincluding some officials in the Trump White Houseand a difficult path to passage in the House. But one lawmaker told The Daily Beast that there was a growing sense of optimism that negotiators will end up with an agreement that could, at a minimum, pass the Senate and put pressure on others to then act.
Congressional sources were universally cagey in talking about the specifics. But in numerous conversations with lobbyists and aides, the basic contours were laid out as follows.
The final deal will reinstate the legal protections for so-called DREAMers that President Trump rescinded when he ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that began under his predecessor. The deal will also undo another Trump decision: the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for certain groups of immigrants, including Salvadorans, 200,000 of whom could face an end to their legal status in 2019.
In exchange for backpedaling two of his initiatives, Trump would score some real policy victories. The deal will revamp but not end the visa lottery program, numerous sources said. There are also ongoing talks of reworking the formula around so-called chain migration, including the possibility of altering the ability of those DREAMers to sponsor their relatives for legal status...
The final deal will also include money for some sort of physical structure along the southern border.

Good point. If they have relatives in their country of origin, they can go back there. Many with a good education & English would be in demand for jobs.
“I think the current system without a wall has allowed about 30 million illegals into the country. I think the democrats and establishment repubs are fine with letting it continue. Do you agree?”
I agree 100%, but I haven’t given into despair just yet.
No more deferment or temporary status for illegals until all the prerequisites for border security are accomplished: the wall built and the laws passed regarding chain migration and all the other national security sell-out gibs the Democrat and GOP-e put in place over the years.
If Congress continues to dither, the DACAns and probationary refugees (dreamers) can go home and wait for these things to happen.
If they squawk too much, the deferred and temps can cool their heels in the 3rd world banana republics and `stans until Mexico pays in full for the wall and `birthright’ citizenship is addressed with legislation that passes SCOTUS muster.
No `86 amnesty redux! Or the shame is on us. We’re not going to make our children deal with this mess Washington DC left for us.
I don’t believe President Trump will sign off on this.
“DJT will have no choice (without a 60 vote margin in the Senate) to either take the deal and piss off his base, or veto it and loose his base.”
False set of outcomes.
If President Trump vetoes this insane plane he will undoubtedly go out of his way to explain why to the base & the base will continue to support him for not caving to the RATs on the wall or chain migration.
There will not be enough votes to override President Trump’s veto. Also, be certain President Trump has a serious of actions & things to save if there is a gov’t shutdown that will work in the nation’s favor & in his.
This is an example of Trump’s legendary negotiating skills?
Not at all impressed. The indians sold Manhattan for more.
“read my lips”
"Revamping" and "reworking" chain migration and the visa lottery = things will remain essentially the same. So if this deal comes to pass, the President would give up a whole lot and get little to nothing in return.
The final deal will also include money for some sort of physical structure along the southern border.
"Some sort of physical structure" = a few chain-link fences here and there. Certainly not at the Big Beautiful Wall along the entire border that was promised.
Memo the the President: no to chain migration, no to the visa lottery, and no to DACA.
And YES to a YUGE wall. You have the power to get it done. And you have the majority of the electorate behind you.
thanks, Liz!

The question is not about DACA. Its about getting something in exchange.
If, in exchange, we get
<><>(A) a wall,
<><>(B) end to visa lottery,
<><>(C) end to H1B taking existing American Jobs,
<><>(D) implementation of E-Verify,
<><>(E) plus DACA,
.......then we are on the right track.
If theres nothing of significance in the exchange, there is room for complaint.

Sam Stein had DEAD EYES...No JOY....like a Joe Conasson....DEAD EYES and Eyes are the Window on the SOUL!
For those who think Trump is stupid, this may make perfect sense.
So, if we can’t change the filibuster and the establishment is content with our broke system now in effect, why would they deal at all?
Sen Flake says they have a deal:
FLAKE on #DACA bipartisan working group: “Were at a deal, so well be talking to the White House about that and I hope we can move forward with it, its the only game in town. Theres no other bill.

Well glad you are so optimistic, but a lot of folks are becoming uneasy with his failure so far to make good on his major promise and others have said, if he does not make good, they will sit out the 2020 election. So I was just going on the logical outcomes politically, given the current climate in the DJT supporting electorate - optimism is great, but needs to be tempered IMHO with pragmatism. So they are not false outcomes, just realistic ones, and perhaps not to your liking.
You suggested President Trump only had 2 choices.
I don’t believe President Trump lives in a world where he only has 2 choices.
It’s one of the many reasons I remain thankful he is President.
“So, if we cant change the filibuster and the establishment is content with our broke system now in effect, why would they deal at all?”
For fear of getting voted out in November. If not that, then I hope Trump will pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. If the wall doesn’t go up and fast, this nation is going to go down the drain.
Sen Flake says lots of things.
My confidence is Flake is nil.
My confidence in President Trump is quite high.
Let’s have the wall or a shoot-on-site of illegals crossing the border. Either is a good deterrent.
But he has to trade to get the wall. What are conservatives okay with him trading that democrats also want?
And what if we wait too long and lise the house or senate
I guess Flake just stated a DACA agreement has been reached. Interesting.
