Congressional negotiators are closer than is publicly acknowledged to finalizing an immigration deal that would codify legal protections for undocumented minors while giving President Donald Trump some tangible victories of his own.
The deal, which is largely being forged in the Senate, still faces major hurdles; chief among them a healthy skepticism by conservatives—including some officials in the Trump White House—and a difficult path to passage in the House. But one lawmaker told The Daily Beast that there was a “growing sense of optimism” that negotiators will end up with an agreement that could, at a minimum, pass the Senate and put pressure on others to then act.
Congressional sources were universally cagey in talking about the specifics. But in numerous conversations with lobbyists and aides, the basic contours were laid out as follows.
The final deal will reinstate the legal protections for so-called DREAMers that President Trump rescinded when he ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that began under his predecessor. The deal will also undo another Trump decision: the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for certain groups of immigrants, including Salvadorans, 200,000 of whom could face an end to their legal status in 2019.
In exchange for backpedaling two of his initiatives, Trump would score some real policy victories. The deal will revamp but not end the visa lottery program, numerous sources said. There are also ongoing talks of reworking the formula around so-called chain migration, including the possibility of altering the ability of those DREAMers to sponsor their relatives for legal status...
The final deal will also include money for some sort of physical structure along the southern border.

If this is the deal, it is a typical GOPe cave, giving Rats what they want and getting very little in return.
There is absolutely no reason to allow “Dreamers” to sponsor relatives. The whole basis of “Dreamers” is that they have no ties to the old country. The US is all they know.

OK - so one can make an argument that these former child immigrants, brought by their parents when they had no say in the matter didn’t “choose” to come here. I got that. And I also understand not holding them responsible for the “sins” of the parents. BUT - IF there “must” be some kind of “amnesty” - there should be some serious requirements:
#1 - any criminal activity should be a disqualifier.
#2 - Anyone hoping to qualify for this “amnesty” should be required to report in and then be monitored for a time period before being granted any sort of permanent legal status. Again - any sign of criminal activity - goodbye.
#3 - Self-sufficiency - are they working, keeping a job, paying taxes, etc. after #2 above? IF not - goodbye.

The bastards are keeping TPA, chain migration, and are just “revamping” visa lottery.
I knew the Repubs in the Senate would stick it to us.

Why a deal?
A liberal judge already preliminarily ruled that Trump can't end Obama’s EO based DACA.
Notice Democrats are not talking about this ruling the way the same libs did on reversing the Travel ban.
Maybe they don't believe in that ruling.

The question is not about DACA. It’s about getting something in exchange.
If, in exchange, we get

.......then we are on the right track.
If there’s nothing of significance in the exchange, there is room for complaint.
