I am upping my game. I really enjoy periodicals and journals. Looking for some recommendations.

I currently subscribe to

City Journal Chronicles First Things World Imprimis and various professional journals and some regional magazines for the waiting room.

Looking for periodicals that are not me too echo-chambers of current thought but instead would like some original thinking, quality writing and interesting topics.

Areas of interest?

Politics Culture Economics Religion Literature Education Finance

Any favorites to share Freepers?

Paper subscriptions are getting harder to find.

I gave up on any of those years ago, so I can't help you with that. Sorry. Hope you find some.

Claremont Review of Books is excellent, as mentioned.

Another I like is Lapham’s Quarterly.

I’m not sure it really applies to your areas of interest, but another favorite magazine of mine is Garden & Gun.

I’ll second the Claremont Review of Books. I read every issue cover to cover. Excellent.

American Spectator is still the best.

And most important.

I would suggest browsing the periodicals at a large university library. There is an astounding variety.

Oh, geez, before you do that, read Who Killed Homer by Victor David Hanson & John Heath.

This site was found by listening to Rush during the past two weeks. It was found to be interesting.

About the site:

“Like you, we are deeply troubled by the growing divisions within America. Discussions today quickly become heated, emotional yelling matches that drive people further apart. Many of us even fear making our opinions known, lest we be ostracized, threatened, fired, or even physically assaulted.

How did the land of the free and home of the brave come to this? Frankly, we see a couple of significant contributors: Breakdown of the education system and the collapse of family and community.”

I like “Congressional Digest”.

It covers the pros and cons of an issue from both sides and in a non-partisan manner. As they say in their website:

Each issue covers a current debate topic, including background information, legislative summaries, and arguments in our original, trademarked PRO&CON® format.

Here’s a link to their website:

http://www.congressionaldigest.com

Be warned though. A year’s subscription ain’t cheap. It’s $345. But I found it to be well worth it.

Here’s a few to start with, and sorry they are all digital and free. I don’t have time for paper-print except the WSJ while I am out for breakfast.

Hi Chickensoup,
Based on some of your comments. You appear to be looking for real print (Dead wood Paper) type journals/periodicals. Is that correct?

Regards

Founded

So your looking for good monthly type subscription. In paper.

No comment on Playboy or Rolling Stone. Not sure how they get some of the writers that they do. A lot of the articles are actually good. Haven’t seen either of them in 20 years or so.
LOL
