during the 50’s we had a cubby back by the old coal chute that was stocked like that..also used for hurricanes, lol...
The bottle has a shelf life date, but I can’t imagine how it would go “bad”. It’s a pretty basic chemical compound with strong bonds.

Also, I remember during the Civil Defense heyday, the book, "Nuclear War Survival Skills" by Cresson Kearny, on Amazon, Nuclear War Survival Skills" by Cresson Kearny was a must read. A friend of mine used to call it the Green Bible. Have it around here somewhere. Guess I'll have to go dust it off and read it again.

As a Foodie, I’m thinking that dying would be preferable to ‘surviving’ on Saltines and Spam. ;)
My Dad is a, ‘Level: Crazy’ Prepper. I just moved him to Assisted Living where he will be living WITHOUT his prepper stuff.
I, however, am now in possession of a LOT more ammo, a few more guns (a really cool Over/Under .22/shotgun combo - can’t WAIT to play with that if we ever warm up!) and a lot of freeze-dried food that is good for another 10 years. ;)

During the 50s we had a neighbor [elderly couple] who built a fall-out shelter in their back yard.
Quite unusual for the time. We were very curious; but they were very private people, and not the type you’d strike up a convo in a neighborly way, with easily.
We kids thought they had somehow *betrayed* the rest of us who were going to die from the fallout. LOL
Saltines & Spam indeed. LOL

This has been a five-year process - his Doctor has wanted him in Assisted Living for that long - but he’s a stubborn old Kraut!
Now that he’s there? He’s loving it. Plenty of ‘Ladies’ to chat with and three hots a day PLUS snacks! When you’re 81, it’s all about the snacks. ;)

When the USSR imploded, I remember some idiot news producer from CNN on a panel. The entire panel was discussing how to spend the surplus “peace dividend”.
The producer made a statement about how boring it was now that the world was safer. I was astonished. With nuclear weapons going missing, and being sold on the black market, I thought we were more at risk than ever.
I notice the CDC begins by judging the possibility of a nuclear incident being improbable. I am amazed that it hasn’t happened yet - a few little “suitcase” nukes smuggled in over open borders....
Well hope for the best and plan for the worst. Never have less than 2 weeks of table ready food and water for you and yours. Peanut butter, tuna, crackers etc and bottles of water a gallon per person per day.
I remember the civil defense training - plan on staying indoors for 2 weeks minimum. After that, you can empty your porta potty, pick up more supplies, and water. You will need to wash off the cans etc. to get rid of radiation, and the person exposed needs to decontaminate.
Corner of a basement is best - makeshift shelter using tables, chests, patio blocks, books etc.
Within 24 hrs the entire US could have some degree of radiation.
