The United Way of Waco-McLennan County’s decision to cut 83 percent of its funding to The Salvation Army of Waco has left Salvation Army officials scratching their heads and questioning the partnership with the nonprofit going into the new year.

The Salvation Army received the largest cut among the 21 local nonprofits the United Way funds. The cuts are part of an ongoing effort to transition from an allocation-based funding model to a grant-based model this year, and a result of a decline in donations in the past five years, United Way Executive Director Barbara Mosacchio said.

Mosacchio, who started the role in March, said the change is not a reflection on the Salvation Army’s work, despite the impression Salvation Army officials may have gotten. Salvation Army officials said they were blindsided by the cut and are unsure where they stand moving forward.

The United Way will make the change in February to streamline its funding model with a new strategic plan and a shift to focus on four core impac

United Way is the biggest scam in charity outside the Clinton Foundation. They are just a middleman getting their 15% cut in exchange for some corporation getting a seal of approval. In the age of the internet there is no reason for the United Way to exist.

Good riddance to sever ties with the United Gay. They lost my support over a decade ago.

The SA needs to tune up the tubas and mount focus on street-corner evangelism.

In my opinion, the Salvation Army should have begun to question their partnership with the United Way a long time ago.

United way keeps 85% of all money to run itself and fund-raise for more money...

I despise United Way. When I was in the USN back in the Seventies, they pressured us to give money to the United Way, and young sailors didn’t make that much. I very much resented it.

Love the Salvation Army, though...

Another reason not to donate to United Way, but to go directly to the Salvation Army, with its extremely low overhead.

United way is a terrible way to donate. Give direct to the charities you support.

We never give to the United Way. Their overhead is far too high.

“United Way is the biggest scam in charity outside the Clinton Foundation. “

Way back as a lowly enlisted man we were ‘coerced’ to give to United Way.

Yes,, another reason to not donate to them or spend your money at Target who stopped SA from collecting outside their stores.

And UW cuts fubds to organizations if you direct your funds to that organization. The lib orgs they fund will never be defunded.

Some donors give to the general fund, some target funding. Those who target ‘free up’ funds from the general fund that othereise would’ve gone to an org like SA.

I’ve worked for companies that shook down departments to participate so they could boast 100% participation.

The United Way is never deserving of anyone’s money. They are a middleman between the donor and the service provider. And they have dramatically moved very far away from their original purpose, which was to simply consolidate the fund raising efforts of several large charitable service providers, to effect an organizational efficiency and eliminate duplication of fund raising efforts.

I'm betting that it has a lot to do with SA being a Christian-based organization, with values and morals and all that. Doesn't fit with UW's objectives.

My last, 50-person company discussed setting up a UW drive. The reaction was strong - No, No and No. Some people were surprised at the animosity to UW, especially the young people. The older majority had been through the high-pressure drives in big companies before, and wanted nothing to do with it.

The BSA helped form United Way, and they were the first to get shivved. Now the SA. Interesting it wasn’t Red Cross. They are another outfit that isn’t up to par.

"Way back as a lowly enlisted man we were ‘coerced’ to give to United Way."

Back at an old job I had we were strongly "encouraged" to donate to a firm wide United Way drive. After I found out that United Way had a CEO making over $750 K a year I refused to donate to them anymore. Coincidentally, that's when I switched to donating to Salvation Army. I bet the Christian nature of the SA is a big factor in this cutback. UW are hard core lefties.
