Congressman King seeks citizenship question on U.S. Census form

Republican Congressman Steve King says census-takers in 2020 should ask if people living in the United States are citizens.

“We need to be counting citizens instead of people for the purposes of redistricting,” King says. “That’s going to take at a minimum a statute and it may take a constitutional amendment and so in this upcoming Census, I want to count separately the citizens separate from the non-citizens, the lawfully present Americans separate from the illegal aliens that are here so that America can see how bad this is.”

King says if the Census is conducted as he proposes, Iowa would gain a congressional seat from a state like California.

“In districts like Maxine Waters, who only needs about 40,000 votes to get reelected in her district and it takes me over 120,000 in mine because hers is loaded with illegals and mine only has a few,” King says. The Justice Department has asked the U.S. Census Bureau to put a citizenship question on the 2020 Census forms, to calculate “the voting-age population” in areas “where voting rights violations are alleged or suspected.” Critics say the question will make it harder to count minorities and immigrants.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s website credits the nation’s founders for planning to “count every person living in the newly-created United States of America and to use that count to determine representation in Congress.” U.S. Supreme Court rulings have upheld the power of congress to direct census-takers to collect other data. The first Census was conducted in 1790 and has been done every 10 years since.

I check a lot of Census records in my ancestor research. 1940 back to 1790.i know I have seen the citizenship question. I don’t remember what years and I am too lazy to go back and look before posting this comment.

I already give them my citizenship. In the area where they ask how much melanin is in my skin, I write in “American”

I took a brief look at the Constitution and it really only discusses counting people, so all they get is the number of warm bodies residing in my house. The rest is usually left blank.

Yes, and NO question about M*SLIM!!!! (They would not use the word m*slim - they plan to ask: “Middle Eastern or North African (MENA)” which is close enough to m*slim to be actually asking about m*slim without using the word.)

How about everyone being AMERICAN and stop focussing on country of ancestors!

California uses the illegals to demand ...

I don't doubt that at all. But what does that have to do with tallying the number of citizens and non-citizens for representation?

BTW - an illegal who is chosen for the census will assuredly NOT divulge that fact and Legal Immigrants can and SHOULD be considered when determining infrastructure needs (state and federal).

The problem is that the Founding Fathers never,in a million years, dreamed that foreigners would violate our citizenship/residency laws.

The Founding Fathers gave us the Amendment process to solve the problems they could not foresee.

I took a brief look at the Constitution and it really only discusses counting people ...

Actually it does say a bit more (and leaves it wide open!)

Article 1, Section 2: "The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. "

I know a lot of people question this, but this is what the government uses to justify more that just number of bodies ... the first census actually also included several questions beyond simply a count. Constitutional Topic: The Census

I read “in such manner...” as the actual methodology rather than questions asked beyond enumeration of live people.

Do they use mail, door to door, smoke signals, make everyone go to the home of their birth, town meetings etc.

I read “in such manner...” as the actual methodology rather than questions asked beyond enumeration of live people.

If that were the case, it would seem to me that Founders such as Madison would have objected to the first Census on those grounds. Instead, he championed questions that went beyond a simple count.

Census, [2 February] 1790

IMHO a certain amount of demographics is necessary and proper - of course, we are saddled with a Congress that habitually goes beyond necessary and proper and instead passes laws that tend to benefit themselves and their sponsors - so I can more that identify with your position!

Also, ask who they voted for in the last election.

From Article 1 Section 2:

I too doubt that the founders would have considered illegal aliens would be appropriate for census purposes. However, the way around this is to have an amendment that says simply:

"Representatives shall be allotted by a count of citizens of the United States. Non citizens may be enumerated for other purposes, but not for the allocation of representatives."

Once passed, make sure the law authorizing the census makes it a felony to lie about being a citizen.

For 'race'. on Census and employment aps, I put "human" - and have since the 1950's = long before it was fussed about.

If they asked: "color" I'd put 'purple"(But now that that color has been usurped, I write "aqua"

Nonsense. The census does not include foreigners.

Otherwise we must count Canada, France, Mexico etc.

Pull your head out.
