Anybody that relies on other countries for their protection by definition is a wuss.
France had no ability to protect itself, and needed many nations to form a credible threat against Germany.
You can argue that they live in the middle of Europe, and so life is tough from an invasion standpoint, but that’s all the better reason to be prepared rather than sitting on your croissants.
Too many of my family died in WWI and WWII, and during Gulf War, France did not allow US overflights from the UK airfields. They had a LOT of business with Sadam’s rule.
If, on the other hand, you go back to the 1500’s the French were badasses. (They singlehandedly turned back the last muslim invasion). Now they invite them to come over!
