Looking back on 2017 is like waking up after a party where you made some poor decisions, such as drinking tequila squeezed from the underpants of a person you do not really know. (At least you hope it was tequila.)
The next day finds you lying naked in a Dumpster in a different state, smeared from head to toe with a mixture of Sriracha sauce and glitter. At first you remember nothing. But then, as your throbbing brain slowly reboots, memories of the night before, disturbing memories, begin creeping into your consciousness. As the full, hideous picture comes into focus, you curl into a ball, whimpering, asking yourself over and over: Did that really happen?
That’s how we feel about 2017. It was a year so surreal, so densely populated with strange and alarming events, that you have to seriously consider the possibility that somebody — and when we say “somebody,” we mean “Russia” — was putting LSD in our water supply. A bizarre event would occur, and it would be all over the news, but before we could wrap our minds around it, another bizarre event would occur, then another and another, coming at us faster and faster, battering the nation with a Category 5 weirdness hurricane that left us hunkering down, clinging to our sanity, no longer certain what was real.

Not a single word about the Trump economic boom or the stock market’s historic rise in 2017. If that had happened under a demonrat president, it would have been his entire article.

Dave Barry is another Art Buchwald, who, when confronted with anything edgy, recklessly went right ... for the capillary. If there ever was a Human Pitcher of Warm Spit, these guys were its high priests. All the depth of Peggy Noonan, all the excitement of golf.
Not sure about that. It’s a good thing that he makes fun of Trump. I’m pretty sure he made fun of Obama.
Tough year for old clueless boomers like Barry.
Like old SNL skits we once thought were funny, we now wonder why we ever thought they were funny in the first place. Dave Barry just isn’t funny anymore.
Nobody seems to know how, specifically, the Russians affected the election, but everybody is pretty sure they did something, especially CNN, which has not been so excited about a story since those heady months in 2014 when it provided 24/7 video coverage of random objects floating in the Pacific while panels of experts speculated on whether these objects might or might not have anything to do with that missing Malaysian airliner.
I'm surprised Dave Barry didn't mention Trump's favorite second home is FLORIDA.... within Barry's world it would explain a lot...
Barry is a funny guy who skewers everyone. Like Matt Groenig. It’s what we need. Or is criticizing Trump when he deserves it verboten on the FR now?
I read the whole thing and was laughing all the way through. Especially with regards to every time he skewered CNN.
Some things are inaccurate, sure. But this is the same bit that said Kim Jong Un dropped a missile on Hawaii, and that Trump was disappointed to find out that he couldn’t fire the rest of the G7.
It’s a humor piece that goes after everyone. It’s delightfully absurd, and I appreciate that.
Respectfully, disagree. Been a long time fan and was cracking up thru most of this article as well.
