A gunman shot and killed a deputy, and wounded four other deputies and two civilians at an apartment complex during a domestic violence call early Sunday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 5:15 a.m., deputies responded the Copper Canyon Apartments complex at 3404 E. County Line Road in Highlands Ranch, between Colorado and University boulevards.

A gunman opened fire, hitting five deputies and two civilians. One deputy was confirmed dead and the six others were taken to hospitals, the sheriff’s office said.

The gunman was shot, is believed to be dead and is “no longer a threat,” the sheriff’s office said.

The words, residents or bystanders would be fine. Falsely implying that police are not civilians without knowing so is incorrect and disrespectful. The trend of generally referring to those who are not civilian police as civilians was started by television police show screenwriters who sought to "deconstruct" our military forces and everything else about what they perceive to be the "patriarchy." The word was applied that way first by weirdo Hollywood English program graduates.

Sounds like an ambush. Unfortunately when responding to a domestic call, you are always concentrated on getting to a particular adress and not so much concerned about a bad guy waiting your arrival. Tactics need to change. The cops come first, then the mess gets cleaned up.
