In the capital they showed their anger through normally taboo slogans, such as death to the dictator, chanted by students gathered near Tehran university a barely veiled attack on the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Clashes with security forces followed.
It was not clear how many were detained in Tehran on Saturday, but scores of protesters are believed to have been arrested in western Kermanshah and eastern Mashhad, Irans conservative second city, where the latest unrest began.

Iran has been the target of Russian imperialism since the days of Peter the Great. The Iranian people have no desire to be another Russian province.
Its hard to say how this will go from here... there's a lot at stake and many players in this.
Yes........However I suspect Wiki Leaks people to step up sooner rather than later and assist in communications..........they will bypass Irans control.
Iran is a direct threat to the US.
We should be doing everything we can to take the mullahs down.
I just ask that - if we had any hand in starting this - we dont turn tail on these brave people in the middle of the revolution, and that we follow through to the glorious end!
That doesn't mean that the Mullahs would turn down Russian help. It just means that the protestors won't.
Wikileaks can't do anything for the Iranian people, they simply publish whatever hacked stuff they come across. Once Internet, TV and radio get shut down its game over for the protesters... UNLESS someone from the outside (like the US/CIA) decides to feed information into Iran via radio or other means. You can bet Russia is doing what they can in this area too in support of the regime.
I agree with that.
Pay attention...I said Wiki Leaks ‘PEOPLE’.....they did so in Egypt and they will do so here.
Frankly, I think theyd rather be under Russia than under the Mullahs. But that scenario is not going to happen.
Russia does have an historical connection with Iran (as does France), so from the Iranian point of view this could be a link with the West, but I dont think they want to be under Russia and I dont think Russia particularly wants another front in the war against Islam. But I do hope the Russians - and the US - support the anti-mullah groups. Quickly and forcefully.
This is the moment.
Iran Gov. ordered a complete black out of the Internet.
“I hope the US is not stirring this up ala Arab Spring, and then well have to go in there and clean up - or else there will be a vacuum that is filled by Really Bad Guys.”
I do not see that happening. Lot’s of changes have been going on in the Middle East in 2017 like what is occurring in Saudi Arabia for instance. President Trump and our allies in the Middle East are not afraid to kill all the “Really Bad Guys” unlike Obama.
It’s being tweeted.......”The regime has never, I repeat never, faced an uprising across ‘such wide swath of social classes engulfing so many cities’.......
I agree “its their moment” and would like to believe this movement belongs to the people and people alone.... Hopefully they have strength and courage to see this through to the end...
Agreed. I would think that obama and valarie jarrett are not liking what is happening in Iran now. They cozied up to the mullahs and not the people.
Bringing down the Mullahs in Iran is a Very Big Deal!
During the Cold War, the Communists were counting on the idea that countries being taken over by Communism had a ratchet effect; i.e., they believed that they had history on their side.
The fall of Eastern Europe and the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union put Communism in the rear view mirror of history for all but the diehards.
Now, the Islamists of all ilk believe the same of Islam. They have talked themselves into believing that history is on their side. Even the European invaders see places like Iran as "safe".
Earlier this year the attempt at a caliphate by ISIS has been rolled back. Now, if Iran can be reclaimed by republican forces that would be a major setback for all those who would impose Sharia law on the world.
In 2009-10 protests regime strangled protests by redeploying elite forces to the cities from countryside. But this time the protests are in the countryside, so different strategy needed.....
Fight for Freedom!
They’re certainly on a roll.....
........Calls going out for protests tomorrow Dec. 31 in all cities of Iran in same locations and same times as today.....
