This was actually Che’s regular shtick.
Mother’s were frequently coming to beg for mercy for their children. Che would often tell them that he had forgotten all about their child, but now that they had brought them to his attention, he would have them executed right away. They would then do so in front of the mother, or just have someone fire a shot nearby, and tell her that was her child being killed - because of her.
He was sadistic about it, and his henchmen were accustomed to this regular “gag”, that Che never got tired of inflicting. He enjoyed being cruel.
