Many of us came into 2017 expecting the worst. And the worst is what we got.
Donald Trump has been every bit as horrible as one might have expected; he continues to prove himself utterly unfit for office, morally and intellectually.
And the Republican Party turns out to be composed entirely of cynical apparatchiks, willing to sell out every principle and every shred of their own dignity as long as their donors get big tax cuts.
Yet Im ending this year with a feeling of hope, because tens of millions of Americans have risen to the occasion. The U.S. may yet become another Turkey or Hungary but it wont happen as easily as many of us had feared.
What weve seen instead is the emergence of a highly energized resistance. That resistance made itself visible literally the day after Trump took office, with the huge womens marches dwarfing the thin crowds at the inauguration. If American democracy survives this terrible episode, I vote that we make pink pussy hats the symbol of our delivery from evil.
The resistance continued with the town hall crowds that confronted Republican legislators as they tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And in case anyone wondered whether the vocal anti-Trump crowds and Trumps hugely negative polling would translate into political action, a string of special elections capped by a giant Democratic wave in Virginia and a stunning upset in Alabama has put such doubts to rest.
Lets be clear: America as we know it is still in mortal danger. Republicans still control all the levers of federal power, and never in the course of our nations history have we been ruled by people less trustworthy.

Marvin, I assume you didn’t post a bold print BARF ALERT only because you emphasized [Paul Krugman.]
Thanks for letting us see what the enemy is up to this cold winter’s morning.

Uuuum,no.
Was this psycho in a coma from 1/2009-1/2017?
.
Just another “garden variety” New York born, Secular Progressive Jewish termite chewing away at the foundations of our Republic.
Translation: America really is lost.
America is not yet lost, despite the best efforts of the Bush League and their cohorts that wear D jerseys.
A “giant democratic wave in Virginia” and a “stunning upset in Alabama?” Man, what an insightful observer Mr. Krugman must be. s/
Only five words will do for Krugman’s overdue obituary:
“The man who loved mirrors.”
Krugman ... hasn’t he got some responses to block on his blog?
As a Jew myself.. your chacterization is absolutely correct. I groan every time i see these marxists giving the rest of us a bad name.
Krugman’s optimism is cause for pessimism. When he thinks we’re doomed, there will be hope for America.
I don’t know what a “krug” is, but it sounds like an unholy union between a crook and a slug. And Paul is one heck of a krug, man.
This guy is certifiably insane - or should I relegate him to the position of a “deplorable”? [maybe not since we conservatives have been so labelled, and maybe giving him this same name, which we have now embraced is a not appropriate].
His entire oped piece is one big insult to about 50% of the country, especially anyone who lives outside the east and west coast big cities and a select few metro areas in between.
Whats wrong with tax cuts Paul? I thought you said the only thing wrong with the deficit is that its far too low.
