For many parts of the nation, a prolonged period of punishing cold is just getting started.
The cold snap that descended on much of the nation from the Rockies eastward on Christmas Eve is predicted to become further entrenched and even more biting in the coming days. The worst of the cold may grip the central United States from Saturday through New Years Day, when temperatures may fall more than 30 degrees below normal. Then it may spill eastward.
As the Arctic air poured over the Great Lakes, it produced astronomical snowfall amounts. An incredible 53 inches of snow piled up in 30 hours in Erie, Pa., Pennsylvanias biggest two-day snowfall on record.

Didn’t leave the cold water tap dripping in the kitchen overnight
and this morning it looks like the hose is blocked by ice.
Kitchen/Bath hot water line ok and Bathroom cold water still okay.
My first winter here...live and learn.

The more of a misanthropic curmudgeon I become, the more I like cold weather because it makes people MISERABLE! And that makes me HAPPY!
I figured it was due to rounding by the NWS computer. The temp was probably really - .999 or some such.
It is so cold here in SE Georgia we had to mostly close the windows. It is currently 57 degrees.

At this time of year where I live the outdoor heat is only on for ten hours while heat is radiated to space for fourteen hours.

Thank goodness for Gorebull warming or everyone in that area would become a popcycle.
That’s a little too much. Where I am people say we need some cold to kill bugs etc.
