Two Layers of Graphene Make Diamond-Hard Armor That Can Stop a Bullet
Futurism ^ | Dec 21, 2017 | Kyree Leary

IAMOND-HARD ARMOR The media tends to depict bullet-proof armor as something that’s thick and heavier than regular clothes. Despite being for bodily protection, the added bulk of that armor might restrict a person’s movements. But scientists at the City University of New York’s Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) have found that diamond-hard armor doesn’t need to be thick. The key to less-bulky protection is graphene, a tightly-packed layer of bonded carbon atoms one million times thinner than a piece of paper.

The researchers discovered that two layers of graphene stacked on top of one another can temporarily become as hard as diamond — and just as impenetrable — when struck by, say, a bullet. The hardening of the new material, called diamene, only happens when exactly two sheets of graphene are layered together, according to the study published in Nature Nanotechnology. When more sheets were added, the hardening effect didn’t happen.

Armor that thin will need thicker materials to reduce the shock of impact

I got it. A flux capacitor!

Me thinks someone reverse engineered Superman’s outfit..

Ever wonder why Superman just stood there, arms akimbo, while the Bad Guy shot at him, but ducked when the empty gun was thrown at him?

"The age of the firearm is rapidly drawing to a close."

A wee tiny diamond mounted at the tip of the bullet should fix the problem. And there "are" ceramics harder than diamond that bullets can be plated with. But an interesting material discovery nonetheless.

Exactly. Just as a shark-proof suit doesn’t make a diver invulnerable.

They need to combine this with shear thickening fluid body armor, on the inside of the graphene plates. When the force is transferred from the graphene to the fluid, the impact will thicken the fluid into a gel which absorbs the shockwave.

"Industrial production of graphene is going to change society as much as integrated circuits have."

I suspect far far more. Saw a YouTube vid yesterday extolling a COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE (according to the vid) graphene battery.

"The electronic and optical potential of graphene is at least as exciting as are it’s mechanical and structural properties."

“Why do I suspect that “GRAPHENE” is a word I’m going to be very sick of hearing about soon?”

I hate how marketing gloms on to a buzz word and applies it in totally irrelevant ways. “Turbo” as an example. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Turbo” dogfood when that was the hot word.

Because he was proof against bullets, not thrown objects.

Yep, ya must distribute the transfer of the kinetic energy to a much larger area and increase the amount of time for the energy to transfer to it.

Small graphene powerbanks are already available on Amazon at reasonable prices.

Many appear to be designed for drone usage where very rapid recharging is desirable.

Have my eye on a 9000mAh unit at about $50.

From Amazon graphene powerbank product description...

"We may come in all different shapes and sizes, but what we all have in common is that we are all made from the same Carbon-element as Graphene.

You are Graphene.

Graphene is YOU.

The Graphene series is developed for us ALL. Whether at home, at work, globetrotting or just having fun - LinearFlux Graphene keeps you HyperCharged!"

Not just graphene!

Linear Flux graphene!

Hey Laz, add me to the graphine ping list. Hint, hint.

Been quite a few threads posted about it recently.

You are added to the graphene ping list.

If I ever make one. :)
