Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been formally barred from competing in next year's presidential election.
The Central Electoral Commission has said Mr Navalny was ineligible because of a corruption conviction which he says is politically motivated. He has urged his supporters to boycott the March vote.
Mr Navalny, 41, was widely regarded as the only candidate with a chance of challenging President Vladimir Putin.
"We're declaring a strike by voters. The procedure that we're invited to take part is not an election," Mr Navalny said after the decision, adding that he would lead protests across the country.
Known for his anti-corruption campaign and protests against Mr Putin, Mr Navalny was given a five-year suspended sentence in a retrial earlier this year on embezzlement charges.
Reacting to the widely expected decision, Mr Navalny said the case was intended to block him from "speaking the truth" about the situation in Russia, and that barring him from running would deny millions of Russians their vote.
Mr Putin is seeking a fourth term that would see him become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin. He still retains a massive approval rating and is almost certain to ease to victory in the election.

Barred from competing?
Why? Did they find out he was born in Kenya or something?
Did anybody tell Bernie Sanders this election is coming up? He could bring his supporters with him to Russia and maybe have a better chance of winning than he did running as a Democrat here.
Bernard (hah you share the same name as Sanders!) actually...I remember reading about this character a few weeks ago:
“Vitali Shkliarov: The man bringing Sanders-style politics to Moscow”
http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/09/europe/vitali-shkliarov-russian-politics/index.html
I suppose any education in how actual elections are run is a good thing for Russia— but I also take note that one of the weaknesses of Russia’s opposition movement is that it’s currently dominated by a bunch of hipster types. Conservatives will tend to stick with Putin or not vote as they have no other options.
You are either corrupt or poisoned. Signed, The Kremlin.
that’s pretty accurate.
“Mr Navalny, 41, was widely regarded as the only candidate with a chance of challenging President Vladimir Putin.”
Widely regarded by CNN,NBC,BBC,Hillary’s supporters
even with extensive vote rigging on the part of the Kremlin, Navalny won 30 percent of the vote in the Moscow mayoral elections a few years back. he likely won’t WIN but have enough of a showing to damage the perception of Putin’s “super-majority” grip.
Wild thought here. The lefties have had their panties in a bunch over all this Russian election stuff.
What are the odds they’re going to try to meddle in their election as payback....
Actually their probably taking notes for use in our next election.
Leftists learn from the best and they’re still scratching their heads as to why their attempts at rigging the vote for OUR election went wrong and have no other option but to cry about Russia (which is more focused on rigging their OWN elections.)
That’s un-American!!
Bernie Sanders? I don't remember seeing any Bernards in the Old Testament, which must mean his namers were guilty of cultural appropriation.
Why? Did they find out he was born in Kenya or something?
No, Russian authorities found a secreted email server in his unlocked outhouse, and records of his Uranium sales to the Americans.
What are the odds theyre going to try to meddle in their election as payback....
Yeah, "Payback" for the failure of the MSM Fake News "Russia, Russia, Russia", and Fake Fusion GPS/Steele Dossier.
He is a famous opposition activist, but merely got 30% in a low-turnout local election.
Unlikely to be competitive in a presidential election.
Looks like he’s got Sorositis.
That was awhile ago...national climate has changed especially for younger voters. Economy and living standards deteriorating.
Navalny’s the first figure to get people to show up for major protests in the regions outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Wow. We have a winner here!
That’s a very good point! 2013 was the year when the oil was still over $100 and the Russian rouble hadn’t collapsed yet either. Considering that Navalny isn’t allowed on TV it also takes him a long time building support.
