Ten years ago, a family arrived in the Bronx from Yaoundé, Cameroon, not speaking a word of English. This Christmas, they are celebrating a feat that would be impressive for any family: Three of the familys five daughters have been accepted to Ivy League universities.
In a year in which our nativist president would have you believe that immigrants are, at best, a job-stealing drain and at worst, criminals, rapists and people with AIDS, these three remarkable sisters are worth paying attention to. Not just because they are inspiring they are but because they are far better ambassadors for this country and exponents of its ideals than the 45th president.
We brought the girls to this country because there are better opportunities here, says Flore Kengmeni, their mother, who works as a nurse. I dont know of another country where you can try hard, work hard and get somewhere. Where you are given the opportunity to fulfill your potential.
This country is built on immigrants, Francois de Paul Silatchom, their father, a professor of economics at SUNY, starts to say, before his middle daughter, Ella, a sophomore at Yale, interjects: Our experience as a family is what America is.
All three girls admit it wasnt easy. They recall sitting in class during their first year in America and not understanding what their teachers and classmates were saying. They remember being made fun of, but not really knowing why.
Everyone spoke so fast and I guess we speak that fast now, too, says Xaviera, the youngest of the three, who was accepted to Harvard earlier this month.

Just a typical immigrant family with a father who is an Economics Professor and a mother who is a nurse. It appears that they also came legally and wouldn’t have been affected at all by a ban on chain migration. I’m sure the NYT will clarify those points in future editorials.

Yea right. Another leftist attempt to try and lump legal immigrants in with illegals.
If the daughters were white, they would ever have been accepted into Ivy League schools.
Absolutely true and someday more brainwashed people will understand that very true reality.
The MSM is the Country’s greatest threat.
So, is Tariro Mzezewa just a credulous idiot or is Tariro Mzezewa also a boldfaced liar and propagandist?
She went to Yale ...enough said.
Look at the news stories about kids who just happened to be accepted at every Ivy - have you ever seen a white one? I haven’t.
What an insipidly dumb and juvenile article, not fit for a liberal college news rag.
What motivated this family to leave Cameroon?
If they are such exceptional people, why did they not apply their passions and their skills to reforming Cameroon?
By the way, until the three daughters release their scores on various aptitude tests, I will assume all of them were admitted to fulfill Affirmative Action quotas.
Great points made in the replies already posted. There also is a difference between a “resident” and “citizen” mentality that the left ignores because they really hate those citizens that love this country and all that it stands for. I personally think the left and progressives have a great spiritual sickness and that is our real “battleground”. In any event, Merry Christmas!
Just a little bit of truth and reality goes a long way.
Arguing against reality by citing a minuscule exception is an absurd argument against a monumental and permanent gigantic future expense in the face of a 23 $trillion debt.
The billionaire dem criminal pols (Pelosi, Feinswein, the other midget Barbara Boxer who abandoned the sinking ship) will be retired fat, dumb and happy when the debt comes due.
Please spare us any further BS!!
One of these days we'll have to figure out this troll's previous Freeper names, before the was unceremoniously kicked out the door on his ass...
It looks like the social justice warriors forgot to tell this family of black immigrants how racist the U.S. is.
Over 25 years ago, I saw a Nigerian shopkeeper on a near-daily basis for about a year. Never bought anything from him since he was selling ladies clothes, but every day I walked past he would chat for a few minutes and he always brought the conversation around to the great opportunities available in the US.
I think he missed the news about the horrific racism also. Didn't seem to have a lot of use for US race baiters either.
Somehow guys who have seen real discrimination at some point in their lives can live with our system.
It looks like you've got plenty of time for some detective work. It's not like you're searching the Internet looking for articles to post.
before the was unceremoniously kicked out the door on his ass...
Why don't you just unceremoniously kick me out now? What's that? It's not your site and you're not an Admin? Oh, I see.
Have a Merry Christmas and I look forward to entertaining you in 2018.
