The EMP Commission Report (pdf) does a fairly decent job of explaining the effects. The report discusses the different components of a nuclear pulse. We are also vulnerable to Carrington like events. We have not experienced one (with such severity) since our adoption and dependency on electricity, satellites and communications.

Yea, I know about the Carrington Event, including the one (in the past year or two) that happened to not head in our direction, but would have put us several million years behind the Flintstones.

Regarding the details of a nuclear EMP...I don’t know much about it them - but I suspect that we can harden against them without much trouble - provided we can get past thinking that only Art Bell considers such a strike as credible.
