THE man who deliberately mowed down 19 people at a busy Melbourne intersection had an appointment for mental health treatment on the day of the attack but did not show up, police said.
The driver, named by the Herald Sun as Saeed Noori, 32, has been revealed as having a history of mental illness and drug use, and was on a mental health plan.
Speaking on Friday morning, Victoria Police acting chief commissioner Shane Patton said the man had a medical appointment booked on Thursday.
He is on a mental health plan and he was due for an appointment yesterday, which he missed, Mr Patton said in an interview on Channel 9s Today.
During that preliminary interview with investigators who are looking at this matter, he spoke about dreams, he spoke about voices, but he also did attribute some of his actions to the poor treatment of Muslims.

If it looks like a terrorist and acts like a terrorest....
Uh huh. The mental illness is Islam.
In the wide swath of Muslims who commit terrorist actions.. a few will be clinically insane.
Oh yeah, a mental health appointment, that would have prevented what they are failing to call a terrorist attack.
Come on, Australia.
Let the excuses and the alternate explanations begin! Pay no mind to the fact that this was an Afghani who mowed down Christmas shoppers.
I saw this on the news yesterday. They immediately said there was no indication of terrorist ties. I actually thought to myself, “well maybe it really was an accident”.
Then they showed a short video of him being pulled from the vehicle. As soon as I saw him I knew he was a terrorist. So should everyone else.
In my travels I've learned, contrary to the claims of many Western "progressives",that all cultures are not equal.
Missed his appointment with the barber, too?
And the guy with three knives/ the passenger/ did he also miss a mental health appointment? Was he also ON a health plan? May I suggest that ‘on a mental health plan’ will NOT cure Islamic Jihad.
oh nevermind
I’m not sure the other person was a passenger in the car - some reports initially said that, later reports suggest he was just a bystander.
The second man who was arrested has been released pending further investigation as to why he was carrying knives (which is an offence if you don't have a specific reason) but it not linked to the man still in custody. He was a bystander, not a passenger in the car.
The DSM-IV-TR and ICD classify Aloha Snackbarism as a mental disorder.
I understand why the cops can’t just immediately come out and say it is terrorism even when it appears to be.
On the other hand, the authorities seem to go out of their way to say something like, “there is no indication of terrorism” when there actually is. Why can’t they just say “we don’t know yet”.
It is not just Australia either. It is all Western governments. There may be exceptions such as Israel tho I guess they are not technically a Western Nation.
Nothing wrong with him a load of lead between the eyes wouldn’t cure.
I just saw a report which said the police say it is not terrorism. There you are.
