P.T. Barnum always has been regarded as a great entrepreneur and show business pioneer who saw things no one else did, perhaps realizing the business was just one big circus.
The new musical The Greatest Showman avoids the pitfalls of typical biopics to become more of a fantasia of song and dance, a joyous exercise in pure entertainment that is made for the holiday crowd.
If it doesnt get swallowed up by other family fare like another Jumanji, another Star Wars, another Pixar toon and even Foxs own Ferdinand, audiences will discover than true rarity: an original movie musical.
Although we havent seen a big circus-based movie musical since, well, Doris Day in 1962s Jumbo (or at least one that I can fondly recall), this is thankfully a fun one that fires on all cylinders without being cynical or pretentious.
Jackman was born to play this role, and he knows it. It is worth catching if you care about original movie musicals at all.

No. Barnum’s, or your, numbers are incorrect. The father and son are 29 years apart. When the dad is 40, the son will be 11, 60 and 31, etc...
Curious and not optimistic about where they go with the bearded lady.
I didn’t say they weren’t. I said the father was 30 *times* the son’s age at the start. It’s the ratio that is key; the ages are rounded for the sake of the story.
What is Shape of Water about?
From the descriptions and reviews, it sounds like a high quality Science Fiction movie.
From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro comes THE SHAPE OF WATER, an otherworldly fable set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
To which I'll add: she finds an amphibious being being held in captivity, and makes plans to free him. Probably a love story but I haven't got that doped out yet. 94% on the tomato meter.
Thanks
