I say move the Capitol in conjunction with the downsizing. Real estate goes down as Virginians with government jobs follow to deep blue states where it doesn’t matter. I say Illinois. Put branch offices in Hawaii and New Mexico for working vacations.

Yes, the Commonwealth of Virginia is a reliable Democrat state, and the recent debacle in Alabama shows any state in the south is no longer an automatic lock for conservatives. Demographics are changing but Republicans no longer represent conservative voters.

My primary residence is in VA, secondary in WV. That may be changing before long.

VA is gone, and I’m glad we all have this clarity. The GOP will sooner be able to make inroads with black voters than government workers. African-Americans vote for Democrats out of cultural peer pressure. Government workers vote for Democrats because their continued livelihood is directly tied to the increasing size of government. There is nothing the GOP can offer them - ever.

As long as the campaign money remains firmly in control of the RINOs such as we saw with McConnell's fierce opposition to Roy Moore, we will continue to see loss of Republican strongholds. The RINOs don't care about being in power. They just want to keep their individual seats and do not care whether they're in the majority or minority.

No. Virginia and the areas around our military bases in the 1960/70’s was very blue then.

Here in Florida, we still have the Panhandle, North Central Florida and the Tampa-Orlando corridor burbs plus the large military presence to offset the South Florida and minority vote. We are hanging on for now. Trump won by 112,000 votes..

You forgot about the Alabamians, now basking in the national glow of their heartland liberalism!

That’s my home territory. I suspect you underestimate the effect of half a million to a million new Puerto Rican residents. My late cousin’s wife is Puerto Rican. She is not at all optimistic about San Juan and Mayaguez moving to Dade and Volusia.

The problem in Virginia is compounded by circumstances unique to Virginia. First, the GOPe leadership is one of the most feckless in the entire nation. They think the way to win an election is to mail, mail and mail. They have NO presence on the ground and couldn't care less about it. The Virginia GOPe VEHEMENTLY hates Conservatives and would rather lose elections then have Conservatives empowered. It's been that way even back in the days when Virginia was reliably red.

Secondly, Conservatives, themselves, are deeply divided between the strong Christian right that remains vehemently pro-Cruz and #neverTrump (the Cuccinelli wing) vs. the pro Trump supporters. . who themselves are divided between those that support Corey Steward (presently Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and former candidate for Governor) and those that see Steward as a self-adsorbed huckster.

Yes all the other elements are things that effect us. . illegal immigrant voters, deep blue government worker inundating the Northern Virginia counties bordering the Swamp. . .but the most essential cause to our failure is that our team is seriously divided and dysfunctional.

“Yancey’s campaign is reportedly contesting the recount on the basis that one ballot was not properly counted.”

And Republican Yancey got that vote counted by the judges.
IT’S OFFICIALLY A TIE!
Now they draw lots.

Legal immigration and domestic migration from the Northeast have turned VA solid blue. Liberal NoVA will increasingly dominate the state electorally. One-third of Fairfax County is now foreign born. When Kerry won Fairfax County in 2004, the first time a Dem had done that in 40 years, the die was cast. In 2012, the ballot was in Spanish for the first time any county in VA had a ballot in two languages.

It is simply a matter of numbers. The Dems outnumber the Reps and it is becoming increasingly the case. The Dems are piling up huge margins of victory in NoVA and in the cities. 20% of VA is black. The white rural areas of VA can no longer overcome the Dems.

It really doesn't matter any more whether the Reps are united or not. They just don't have the votes. Demography is destiny.

Not so fast. The president won FL by over 110,000 votes. He’s planning to campaign among the Puerto Ricans and will certainly gain enough of their votes to help his cause. Donald Trump is on it.

Florida is also seeing plenty of newcomers from Venezuela. They of course are not American citizens, so they can’t vote unless the become citizens. But many of them will because most of them are virulently anti-leftist, just as their predecessors from Cuba were.

They came here to escape the dictator Maduro. They yearn for freedom. They are a growing conservative constituency.

Take heart. Things are improving under this president.

The flip side of this is that the Rust Belt states seem to be getting more red over time.

Michigan is now far more red than I ever realized even before it ended up in Trump's column in the 2016 election. They've got a Republican governor, Republican control of the state legislature, and a 9-5 Republican edge in its House delegation.
