Every vote matters.
Canvassers say that to you when they knock on your door and call your phone before Election Day.
But contests rarely come down to a single vote.
Tuesday was an exception.
Democrat Shelly Simonds picked up 11 votes in a stunning day-long recount to upset Republican incumbent Del. David Yancey in the 94th House District Race,
11,608 to 11,607.
The recount changes the complexion of the Virginia House of Delegates as Republicans and Democrats split the chamber 50 members to 50 members and ushers in a new era of politics in the General Assembly, which begins its session Jan. 10.
Republicans have controlled the chamber for 17 years.
Simonds' win also sets of waves of ramifications not seen since 1998, the last time the House had a split power agreement.
"They've been so excited to get me up there," Simonds said of her Democratic colleagues minutes after the results were announced.
Kirk Cox, the Republican leader who was set to become Speaker in 2018, congratulated Simonds in a press statement.
"The responsibilities of the House of Delegates as an institution transcend party labels, and our obligations to govern this Commonwealth remain," Cox and other Republican leaders wrote in the statement. "As we have said for the last six weeks, we are committed to leading and governing alongside our colleagues."
Gov.-elect Ralph Northam said in a tweet: "Every vote matters congratulations Shelly Simonds. Looking forward to partnering with you to make life better for every Virginian, no matter who you are, no matter where you live."

Virginia is for Commies
Looks like fraud. It must be challenged.
It would be a “suspension of belief” for a DIM to “just so happen” to win by 1. DIMs are never honest about anything.
Since when is turning over a long-held majority in any state legislature “minor league?” There is a Democrat Lt. Gov. who will break all tie votes. Last time VA had that situation the Lt. Gov. was Tim Kaine who cast a lot of votes that hurt people in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
It’s a BLUE WAVE!
Virginia’s lost...far,*far* too many residents receiving government checks. And many, many of those checks are very large ones indeed!
Yes. Isn't that strange?
Just by randomness, republicans should win 50% of these recounts. But they don't.
Put it in the same categories as whenever a defective price scanner at the grocery store is found, it ALWAYS favors the store.
And at a casino, when someone wins a huge jackpot, it's ALWAYS a "defective" machine, favoring the House.
I hate republicans for many reasons, but the fact that they have no interest whatsoever when this happens 99.9% of the time.
They simply roll over and take it.
And BTW, how come once the democrat wins, the recount *automatically* stops?
No argument, no gnashing of teeth, the fifteenth recount that puts the democrat over the top is the gold standard.
I had Virginia Beach all locked in as my retirement location.
Virginia is now solid commie Dem. Looks like it is time to find a new state to retire too. Oh well, it is not as if taxes and living costs were particularly low in Virginia.
It is a dirty shame we can’t just give NoVa to Maryland, WV, or DC and let the rest of the Commonwealth be conservative.
Now I have an additional reason to hate commie libs.
WV is now fairly much GOP!
Yes there’s Manchin but he’s sort of the last passenger pigeon.
Boxes of ballots floating down the Potomac....
Similar shenanigans in Minnesota is how we got the bozo Franken in The Senate.
Isn't that how it's done nowadays?
Count the votes again and keep counting until the results are correct.
No. There is no provision to break a tie in the VA House, which only means that if the Dems all vote together they can still stop any Repub measure they want.
NO! Far from it. Northern Virginia, called NoVa, is a D.C. suburb saturated with commie liberal Federal employees. South of those 2 counties, Virginia is solidly conservative. The problem is the economy has stunk since 2008 and the only rapid growth is in the size of D.C., so NoVa has exploded the last 2 years and is now dominating politics in the Commonwealth. If only Loudon and Fairfax counties were in Maryland, then only MD would be commie lib and Virginia would have been spared. By D.C. being between them, the D.C. cancer metastasized into both. Isnt Virginia a suburb of Washington D.C.
Self inflicted wounds.
For years the establishment of the Virginia GOP sold out to the Chamber of Commerce and the K St lobbyists on illegal immigration and cheap labor.
They stabbed in the back good conservatives like Cucinelli for governor, actually supporting the democrat McAuliffe. They refused to crack down on illegal immigrants and even gave them cheap in state tuition, attracting more of them.
Now, Northern Virginia is a mixture of Baghdad and El Salvador, with some of the most corrupt government and elections in the nation. Non citizens vote by the tens of thousands, guaranteeing democrat majorities forever.
Virginia is now East California. And it is the fault of RINO Republicans.
Learn the lesson, the rest of you. And it all happened in the last 15 years.
There was massive voter fraud in the Virginia election. That is because they thought the dem Governor was tanking. It bled heavily into very red districts. Normally they do this so as to go unnoticed. However they over did it and won a bunch of seats. Now the Trump voter fraud fighters must come in and do a statewide audit.
Don’t Democrats usually win in recounts?
Well, WE got Mawful cause people didn’t like Cuchinellis’ haircut, now we got a REAL LIB lackey because the ‘establishment’ foisted a ‘loser’ upon us and more stayed home so we end up with 3 LIBS in charge (AGAIN).
I personally ‘like’ Corey Stewart but believe he is too much of a lightning rod for the hell he raised in PW a few years back.
Both of these lib Senators should be vulnerable BUT hard to tell anymore.
Jill Vogel should have gotten LTGOV - hell ‘they’, the party of the people(GAG) ran a Black and never mentioned him until the Rs FINALLY asked WTF but the combination of people staying home cost us LTGOV and AG .
Lost a good R seat by plain stupidity - he/she/it won because the R Opponent wouldn’t recognize it - at all- I mean wouldn’t debate and basically didn’t even run against it - didn’t WE learn anything with the BO debacle? It kept saying it didn’t want to use the man calling himself a woman just because HE wears a dress but kept ‘returning’ to that theme.
Lost another good R in Fauquier/PW to a Peruvian(??) immigrant ... the incumbent railed on her bankruptcies - not real smart when dealing with ‘working class’ people.
Maybe mention it once but don’t make it your dining room centerpiece...Reminded me of the Bob Dornan-Sanchez race in CAL few years back.
Like has been previously stated Rs NEVER win by less than 500, D keep the ‘recount’ up till they win by a ‘couple’ then just shut down the recount...AND -predictably the Rs just pack their bags and go home.
Sorry to say it will probably get worse than better...
Time to move into that light house or mountain top and say F em all.....
There is no election in America above dog catcher level that you can’t find 11 illegal Democrat votes.
