The goal was to promote the city of Colorado Springs as "Olympic City U.S.A." But the method — erecting a big blue frame at the edge of a scenic overlook at Garden of the Gods Park — drew anger from residents. Just days after it was put up, the frame was taken down. The frame, seemingly meant to add pizzazz to park visitors' photos, sparked "sustained outrage" instead, member station KRCC reports. Its arrival last week took many residents by surprise. It was taken down on Monday, without ceremony.
"It seemed like a very strange thing to put in this natural landscape," Peg Shannon, of Colorado Springs, told KRCC.
Commonly referred to as simply the Big Blue Frame, the 8' x 12' structure drew criticism even as it was being installed. It had "mysteriously" appeared, said the outdoor hiking and adventure group UpaDowna, which raised awareness of the frame on its Facebook page — where a visitor to the park wrote on Friday, "Even the installers are sad about it."
The Colorado Springs' city government responded to the negative reaction by calling the frame "a whimsical and fun way for residents and tourists alike to share the beauty" of the park. And, the city added, it hadn't been paid for with tax dollars.
But others persisted in calling the frame tacky, ridiculous, and a blight on a beautiful park that already draws millions of visitors yearly.
As the structure was being removed on Monday, the city issued a statement saying that the blue frame "was conceived by the marketing advisors" who had hoped it would trigger interest on social media.

I cannot believe a city so in-tune with the outdoors would even consider putting up such an ugly monstrosity. The "marketing advisors" who proposed this probably have never left their miserable little cubicles and never put on a pair of hiking boots!
The Garden of the Gods is a gorgeous place. Good for those who opposed the flame.

That’s interesting, since Colorado voters turned down the Winter Olympics in 1972 and thereby put the state on a blacklist when it comes to choosing the site of future Olympic Games.
So it went from "Beer Garden" to "Garden of the Gods." Blame ole Rufus.

Isn’t that gorgeous? We were there mid-day and the lighting wasn’t anywhere near as dramatic as that sunset shot, but it is still simply magnificent any time of day.

Nope. No twisted draws. Just saw an ugly sign block a beautiful vista and thought the sentiment written on it was adman written.
I wonder how much money the city wasted on the marketing consultants, sign, and installation / removal cost.
Nice scenery! Of course it could be improved by flattening out those jagged rock formations and cutting out that dead tree. /sarc
