A restaurant in Texas is defending itself against racism allegations after hanging a sign that uses a derogatory term for African Americans and depicts a blackface caricature.
The sign, which features cartoonish blackface with Coon Chicken Inn printed on the grinning teeth, has made the rounds on social media with many calling it racist and infuriating.
Cooks Garage in Lubbock, TX, claims the controversial sign is part of history, according to Everything Lubbock. The restaurant, which reportedly features other vintage signs as part of the aesthetic, denied any racist intent in a now-deleted Facebook post.
Aunt Jemima, mammies, and lots of other black collectibles are highly sought after, as is Americana collectibles with white characters, said the message, The Root reports. The Coon Chicken Inn was an actual restaurant started in the 20s. Again, we want to stress we do not intend to offend anyone, and are only preserving a part of history that should remind us all of the senselessness of racial prejudice.

I miss Sambos.
Yup...
They had a few of those in California.
My aunt worked at the Coon Chicken Inn in Seattle.
We used to have a Po Folks restaurant near us. They changed their name to Folks in order to be more culturally sensitive. About a year later the restaurant was gone.
Klan hoods and robes are part of our history too. Maybe they can dress their serving staff accordingly?
Absolutely. Is it a free country, or are we to be ruled by witch hunts and political correctness?
The reason we are in the “age of the perpetually offended” is because we have catered to them over and over.....let them wallow in their mental illness w/o joining them.
They're still around - all in florida though...
We're currently living in the age of the latter - it's a repeat of the 17th century with the witch trials. Perhaps someday like the former era we will grow out of it.
I imagine this business is ruled by forces in the market. So sure they're free to dress their serving staff accordingly, but the market might take a dim view of it and their business would likely suffer. And if you want to condemn witch hunts and political correctness for that as well then you are certainly welcome to.
The Middle East chain will be called “Dune-Coon-Chicken Inn”.
This is ridiculous.
Swastikas are part of history too but I can’t display one. I can own one but to display it as history is only good if I’m running a museum.
A restaurant isn’t a museum.
A restaurant isn’t a museum.
Can’t hang up neon Swastikas either.
There’s also the well known Koffee Kup Kafe in Texas. Been in business forever, well, since the KKK met there. They’ve recently changed the name to just Koffee Kup.
Stupidest decision every.
Not Bill and not Hillary
For a moment I thought SAMBOS was reopening!
