Started ~1pm and is ongoing
Way back in my Drum Corps days in the ‘80s, we used to go to an abandoned parking area at that airport, spray paint a football field, and did our rehearsals there. With the old control tower in the background. I don’t know if we had permission or not, but nobody bothered us or told us to leave.
A major airport hub doesn’t have back up power? They may want to google microgrid.
I’m sooo glad I cancelled the Christmas flight I had to Cal. that was scheduled through Hartsfield this month. Now I get to stay at home with my dogs.
major airlines JetBlue, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest and American Airlines have canceled all flights for the remainder of the day. An official with American Airlines told Jaquez evacuations are underway at the airport.

Net Neutrality repeal!!!
Becoming second class world. Welcome Amazon
My daughter was flying east to Atlanta from BHM to catch a flight west. Just HAPPENED to be in layover mode when the power went out. They boarded anyway and delayed the flight after it left the gate. After an hour the flight was canceled, and the plane has remained parked on the tarmac since.
Last text said that they would be deplaning soon.
After 5 hours with no power,
officials have now decided to evacuate the airport.
If you have to be someplace on time, drive.
Dry run? The passenger’s complaints about staff in continuous disarray makes me think staff at airport have lost their communications. Passenger notes a man “yelling” come this way - where’s the PA system? It’s the level of uncoordination (yeah I know, it’s an airport) that makes me think this is more than a power outage. In the article, passengers talk about acrid smell of electrical “burning” or something.
Probably like what happened in the 2003 blackout. A fault occurs in a section of the grid and instead of isolating the area the excess power is sent down the line which causes another fault which sends more power down the line until the entire grid fails.
“That’s the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That’s the night when they shut the airport down.
Don’t trust your flight to no kerosene lantern runway
When CNN sucks up all the electricity.”
Just not the same.
When does the looting start?
