A complete power outage at the nations busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.
Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."
International flights will be diverted to land at other airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection tweeted.
Atlanta Airport tweeted that reports the outage was caused by a construction crew which cut a power line was "NOT confirmed," and added: "We are working with @GeorgiaPower to identify and fix ASAP." The outage happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to airport officials.

Been there done that. I agree.
that must have been one cable cut.
even in die hard ii the airport had some backup power.
maybe its another sequel.
The airport is still closed here at 6:41 pm EST.
Terror attack is the first thing that entered my mind.
Can’t even imagine the horror of being stuck deep underground on the plane trains between terminals. Climbing those halted escalators up roughly four stories with luggage is unpleasant at best.
A commentor on that article suggested that looting had begun in Atlanta with 8 having already been arrested. ANyone hear anything? It may have just been a sick joke or provocation.
I forgot about those.
What a nightmare.
Oh goodness I had not thought of those underground trains!!
Ugh!
While it is frustrating that my daughter is stuck on a plane on the tarmac, I would much rather her be there than on those trains!
Still not hearing from her.....
Hopefully CNN’s TV’s went out too...
Eerie text from my daughter. They are off the plane and now at check in area. Says it is spooky and reminds her what the Blitz would have been like.
Her and her co worker are bailing on their luggage. Someone from here is headed to Atlanta to get the two of them.
The European inbounds were all in flight ... Wonder where they put Paris-ATL flights? Gatlinburg?
I think so, Georgia Power just doesn’t screw up like this. I grew up in Atlanta and something like this has NEVER happened, waiting on friends and family that still live there to answer...
I have been scanning the airport Facebook pages and twitter stuff.
People are saying that cell and WiFi services are down also. No electricity at all. No charging stations up.
Saw report of fire in an electrical area that also burned out the generators. Other reports say its a construction crew that cut the line from substation.
No flights in or out.
Dig-ins happen regularly with underground electrical utilities, especially in areas of ongoing construction. Excavation contractors can screw up, dig right on top of the bluestake or sometimes the bluestake is incorrect.
I imagine the airport has redundant feeders, but a bad dig-in can take out two feeders if they’re in the same trench. The airport probably has back-up generators, but it would be unusal for the airport to have 100 percent of their load backed up.
I’ ve worked for a major electric utility company for 25 years I handle hospitals, big data centers, two air force bases and airports. Sometimes sh*t happens: redundant feeders get cut into, high fault current damages other equipment, customer’s generators won’t start, etc. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen. I doubt there is any terrorist or other bad actor activities related to this outage.
Somehow, I think I’d rather be stuck in route with my Navigator than stranded like those poor people. Just imagine needing to go to the bathroom in pitch blackness or being handicapped with no reasonable place even to sit down. I’m right now revising my future travel plans to exclude all flying.
Yeah, well, that doesn't always work out so well.
Wow. Electrical crew, eh? Sounds....odd.
I mean it’s not like one could cut a cord and shut down power for entire airport.
Something...seems weird.
Well, there is always Marine 1...
So glad you heard back from her. Reading on Twitter that some cell towrrs are affected as well.
LOL! Cute!
