I suspect he is doing very, very poorly and his SIL and others are just speaking for him. He may well be incapable now of making any statements himself.

Juan McLame doesn’t have the courage to resign so he will be the same albatross he has always been for as long as he can. Right up to his dying breath no doubt.

He didn't really say what was on his mind, but I read that statement to mean that, McCain is as well as can be expected. IOW, it doesn't look good.
I was the same way when my mother was dying, and the same when my brother was dying too. I was in denial, but knew deep inside that the end was near.
