Sen. McCain 'doing well' and in 'good spirits' says son-in-law - though won't be on hand for...vote

Sen. John McCain headed back to Arizona today and will miss the tax reform vote this week.

Meghan McCain's new husband, The Federalist's Ben Domenech gave an update on the senator's condition after the longtime Arizona senator was hospitalized earlier this week.

'Well, John, I'm happy to say that he's doing well,' Domenech answered Face the Nation host John Dickerson, who had asked about the Republican lawmaker. 'He's in good spirits. And he's looking forward to heading back home in Arizona for the holidays.'

CBS News later reported that McCain is heading directly to Arizona and miss key votes on the Republican tax package, which will take place next week.

McCain's absence shouldn't derail the package, despite the slim GOP majority in the Senate, as Sens. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, and Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, have said they would vote in favor of the bill after, at first, suggesting they wouldn't.

Cynical, but probably realistic.

It sounds like he isn't going to do the decent, wise thing and resign to spend his remaining days with his family.

Instead, he obviously plans to remain a "maverick" and die in the saddle with his (surgical) boot on.

I’m going to resist the temptation to badmouth McCain when he’s dying, it’s just not right. We’re supposed to be better than that.

I do think ailing elected officials should resign and concentrate on being with their families in the last days.

He’s just letting everyone know he’s doing well and in good spirits so that it’s clear that he’s not voting with Trump, by hook or by crook. This is his way of not voting yes...he should have been replaced as soon as he was diagnosed.

Exactly so. He truly is "doing well" and "in good spirits" because in his black heart he knows this action is screwing Trump.

It’s hard to be better than that when we’re talking about a person for whom death is the only thing that will stop him from trying to harm this country. Even (supposedly) suffering terminal cancer, he will not stop.

Not cowardice. Just sheer ego.

It is unclear when McCain might return to Washington.

Neva hoppen, GI. He go home to die.

Do we still have an over-under date? And where can I get into the pool? I was looking at middle of February, but that may be highly optimistic. First or second week of January, now.

As there is a Constitutional lower age limit for Representatives, Senators, and President, maybe it is time to add an upper age limit.
