When academics look for male role models, you never know what theyre going to find. "For one thing, there is not much substantive evidence that male role models are decisive in healthy boys development," Michael Kimmel writes in the December 15, 2017 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. "They might be nice to have, but the male role model--the elementary-school teacher, the father, the stern but supportive coach--by himself, as a single variable, doesnt really have much of an independent effect on a boys development."
"And that's why single moms, lesbian moms, female teachers, and female coaches can provide exactly what boys need to develop a healthy identity." Kimmel is a distinguished professor of sociology and gender studies at Stony Brook University.
He also offers us "some campus role models we could all emulate," including:
"The students who campaign for gender-neutral bathrooms around the campus because they don't want others to feel uncomfortable."
"The alumni who threaten to collectively withhold their money until the administration addresses racial, sexual and gender inequalities."
"Here's to you, unsung heroes and heroines, the ones who support the vulnerable and challenge the powerful, regardless of the personal cost." Of course, he doesn't indicate what personal cost his heroes and heroines have paid.
You see the same perverse logic when schools and universities hire affirmative action minorities as faculty, saying that non-white students simply can't learn unless they have role models and mentors who "look like them." Which is very strange, because when I was in college, a large number of my professors were east or south Asian, and I never had any problem learning from them nor did I need to think of them as personal role models in order to do so.
“And that’s why single moms, lesbian moms, female teachers, and female coaches can provide exactly what boys need to develop a healthy identity.”
I was looking for the most stupid example of liberal insanity of the day. I found it.
Male role models should be actual men, not girly boys, queers or metrosexuals. They should be manly individuals who aren’t afraid to face down a bully, repair a car, put up drywall or unclog a sewer.
These are the kind of men that should be role models to young boys.
The sad thing is, since we cover academia, we don’t have to look very hard.
He is a leftist homosexual. What is not disturbing that he writes it, what is disturbing is that it is in some publication called "The Chronicle of Higher Education" which is ostensibly distributed inside the academic echo chamber of liberal 'educators' (if a 'gender studies' person can be called that)
Of course, he is also a sociology 'professor', which is not that far removed. I am sure the media and the left look at this publication as an authoritative voice.
Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, there is no God...
The elite that allow this rubbish for curriculum need to go work in the fields.
LoL.
The "X studies" fields are blatant examples of cultural Marxist ideology masquerading as scholarship in today's elite universities, whether X = African American, Chicano, Gay and Lesbian [LGBTQABCXYZ], Women's [feminist], or anything else. There is really no intellectual content or substance to any of these so-called academic fields of study, just a lot of invented jargon created to dress up minority grievances and to boost self-esteem.
You haven't run across any of my posts?
Ultimately, I suppose, it depends on the definition of “healthy”.
Boy, how right you are. You probably saw it, but if you haven't, check out this thread: "10 Things Every Intersectional Feminist Should Ask On a First Date, and read the article...that crammed a gazillion terms in there about "cisgender" blah blah blah...
If there was any article I would point at to highlight the stupidity of these LQBGAZIPQXCNDF studies, that article would be it!
You win the thread.
Next think you know it’s unisex parent-robots raise the most well adjusted children.
Before I look, let me guess. It talks a lot about "patriarchy" and "rape culture," right?
Of all the buzzwords created by the Left, "rape culture" probably wins the prize for the most inane. Taken literally, it suggests that there's a significant minority or perhaps even a plurality of people who engage in, approve of, and support the furthering of rape, not only as individuals but collectively.
Rape happens, just like armed robbery and burglary happen. But we don't hear anything about there being an "armed robbery culture" or "burglary culture" in America because A. it would be self-evidently absurd and B. it wouldn't serve a political agenda.
“Academic?
Wheres the barf alert?”
Academic IS the barf alert! Come on, you had to know. ;-)
Those are very good points, ek_hornbeck!
They already have a male role model.
Pajama Boy.
They never talk about the “murder culture” in Chicago.
Thanks Academiadotorg. What a reptile.
They might better search for hen's teeth and then make some kind of a trade with Trump or his supporters.
The ChiComs had a good idea: send all the intellectuals to work in the fields.
An American equivalent would be to get a job at Wal-Mart or a fast food place and live on a working man’s salary
Wonder if such an experience would disabuse him of his Marxist nonsense?
