It’s time for the West to get tough on Ukraine
Washington Post ^

Maxim Eristavi is a nonresident research fellow with the Atlantic Council and co-founder of Hromadske International, an independent news outlet, based in Kiev.

Ukraine’s complex political intrigues can be hard to figure out. But this week we’ve arrived at a rare moment of clarity.

The most important domestic issue in our country is corruption. And for the first time in our modern history, we have the people and the institutions in place to fight it.

But at the very moment when anti-corruption officials have really started to tackle the problem, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is moving to undermine them. His followers in parliament have dismissed the head of a crucial anti-corruption committee, and now they’re preparing to neutralize the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), its only independent anti-graft body, which has made a name for itself with aggressive prosecutions of high-ranking politicians.

I personally volunteer to go over and be hard on these Ukrainians.

They leave the West behind.

Western Ukraine is part of Europe. Eastern Ukraine is not.

Partition is the only solution. And for God’s sake, leave us out of it.

So? In the past Crimea belonged to Russia.

In the past Los Angeles belonged to Mexico.

Given that the vast majority of Crimeans are ethnic Russians...it’s no surprise that they chose the stability and familiarity and voted to return to Russia...... further we certainly know now that Ukraine/Kiev was the illegal coup d’etat started with the financial and logistical help of the US...

Crimea didn’t chose anything. The Crimean parliament was stolen at gun point by Russians from Moscow. I realizes you have a Putin fetish and want to airbrush that history but it it was it is.

If it were not for McCain and his little revolution, there would not have been a Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine.

“In the past Los Angeles belonged to Mexico.”

And then we took it, along with the entire southwest, fair and square. Then plowed trillions in investment over 150-200 years and made it ours permanently.

Not unlike what Russia did with Ukraine.

Russia has at least 1/2 million men buried in Sevastopol.

Catherine the Great turned a swamp on the Black Sea into Odessa, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Eastern Ukraine was nothing but nomadic sheepherders, with no law even to partition the land. And Russia turned it into an industrial powerhouse.

As far as I can discern, it’s theirs. Lock, stock, and barrel.

And the West Ukraine was Poland only seven decades ago.

After the Vietnamese Army invaded Cambodia and pushed the Khmer Rouge out, saving countless lives. They were surprised to be later treated as enemy invaders. The moral is that people would usually rather be oppressed and murder by their own leaders than saved by governed by someone else. This is why occupation fail.

Give it back to Moscow. Let the tender mercy of Putin sort out the corruption.

It’s of no concern to the US. It does not affect our security.
