Opposition research must have started as soon as, if not before, Donald Trump announced he was running for president. I am sure many of Trump's Republican opponents, as well as Hillary Clinton, the DNC, liberal interest groups, the media, and others were searching far and wide for trash on Trump.
The research must not have produced enough trash, or else why would the DNC and Hillary have paid Fusion GPS so handsomely to create what is clearly a false document? Fusion GPS trafficked the document to the Justice Department and intelligence officials. They obviously had seen how many intelligence officials had been willing to lie, especially James Clapper and John Brennan, and had seen how the Justice Department had protected the Obama Administration and especially Hillary and her aides no matter what they did. It was obvious that they were not "independent."
The Justice Department and intelligence officials in turn used the fake dossier to justify spying on Trump officials and to open an investigation on supposed Russian collusion. Of course this was fake also because if they would have ever been concerned about Russian collusion they would have also investigated and spied on Hillary. But they didn't.

If you have to invent evidence, there isn’t anything there.
Its rather like the “global warming” issue. If you have to hide evidence, shred evidence, change evidence, cherry-pick evidence, and threaten everyone who doesn’t go along with you, it probably isn’t true.

Fortuitously, or by design, a crooked JD functionary (Rod Jay Rosenstein) appointed old pal Mueller to get Trump. Mueller did the obvious by staffing his office with like minded Trump haters and more crooked prosecutors and FBI agents who were dirty as hell.
Now Trump has some of the top bad guys all in one place. Indictments of Mueller's team to follow.

During the 2012 Presidential run up, the FBI investigated the use of 'foreign influence' by Hillary in her challenge to Obama for the candidate of the RNC for President.
Once Obama won, this 'dossier' was filed away.
In 2016 when Trump won, this 'dossier' was 'edited' and presented to Trump as a bargaining tool for their demands by the FBI. Trump rejected the offer.
Once that happened, the 'dossier' was passed around to the media and to McCain and eventually back to Steele to make it look like it came from a current investigation. The rest, you know.
**So why did Democrats have to create a false document to destroy Trump?**
The old saying comes to mind concerning the Democrats.
“If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull***t!”
“Because the millions they spent....came up empty....”
and because they’re a bunch of colluding, conspiring, duplicitous, oleaginous, subversive, complicit,
adolescent, junior-high-school scu&bags.
(No insult intended for junior high schoolers who are in normal development.)

All their usual tricks didn’t work. Even the last minute accusations of sexual assault didn’t work.
They really went overboard - tried to paint him as a sexual deviant and racist all in one swoop. Peeing on the bed just because Obama slept there? THAT was overkill.
If they had tried to sell a milder story it may have worked out better for them.
Because they tapped team trump without a fisa warrant and needed something to justify getting a retro-warrant
Republicans paid fusion - didn’t find anything useful to use.
When democrats stepped in is when it turned into the Russia setup.
Then there is also Leon Penetta. He pleases ignorant these days, but we know better. He has long been a player on this.

Wouldn’t the doctrine of “Fruit from the Poisonous tree” kick in and void ANY and ALL crimes deriving from the fake dossier?
He is in this too.
Haven’t paid all that much attention to what was actually put in the dossier. But, after hearing about some of it on Limbaugh’s show, I was amazed.
So, Trump and his wife are in Moscow and learn that he’s in the same room that obama was in, the week or two before. Trump and his wife are STAYING in the room. And he decides to call up some hookers to pee in the bed, that, he and his wife are presumably going to sleep in. And that makes sense to someone?
Now, if he had:
1. learned the obama slept in the bed and lit it on fire
2. learned that obama slept in the bed and demanded it’s replacement while uttering something negative about obama
3. instead of obama being there the week before, it was switched and it was that obama was going to stay in the room the next day or two and the morning Trump and his wife were leaving, he had two hookers come in and pee on the bed.
Any of those three, as absolutely outlandish, absurd, ridiculous, unbelievable and insane as they are, would certainly be more believable than what rubbish was put in the dossier.
And, no matter how you feel about him, Christopher Steele is a genius. He came up with some of the most off the wall stuff imaginable, got supposed “experts” to believe it and got PAID$$$$$$$$. Good for him. Not his fault that Fusion, DNC and the FBI were so deranged to try and get Candidate Trump, that they would have believed anything that was thrown at them. Should give everyone a warm and fuzzy knowing that these people are in the positions they are.
