What you also pointed out there, is that if Simon had pulled just a 2.5% swing, he’d have been in a dead heat with Davis.
Of course Davis was about to outspend him about ten to one.
The Republican party leadership in the state still hasn’t heard of the name Simon. Duh!
If he would have had money, if the party had brought in the big names like the Democrats did, if he hadn’t had to scrimp and cross the state in a leased bus while Davis flew around in a leer jet, things would have been very different.
The party has refused to help California Republicans. It’s just a miserable situation.
When crossover primaries was on the ballot, the Republican party leadership was mute on the issue. Today we don’t even get to vote for a Republican vs a Democrat anymore.
The party deserves to die.
There will be no love lost here when it does.
The irony of this is that Davis was ousted a year later over his "pay to play" policies that gave him all this campaign money. The irony of that irony is that we got Arnold Schwarzenegger out of that deal.
To bring this full circle, Schwarzenegger's "October Surprise" was allegations that he groped women on his movie sets. Susan Estrich was especially outraged at the dirty trick (not the allegation), calling it the "Thursday before the Tuesday:"
Just like with Moore today, everybody questioned the timing of the story over the validity of the allegations, and Schwarzenegger won the special election. I will say that, with the hindsight of him fathering a child with his maid, it's possible that these allegations were true after all. This really troubles me. Everybody knows Im a Democrat and Im not a big Arnold voter, not by any stretch. But heres what happened, for those of you who dont know. It is the Thursday before the Tuesday of an election, and I dont like cheap shots, I really dont.
So what does the Los Angeles Times do on the Thursday before the Tuesday? They come out, apparently after a seven-week investigation. They wait until Thursday, and they come up with an article that quotes anonymously four women and names two women.
But heres my point to the L. A. Times. If you had a serious story to run, if you thought there was serious misconduct, you dont wait until the Thursday before the Tuesday. You run it early.
Unlike Schwarzenegger, Moore has led a much more traditional lifestyle that belies the allegations.

That turned out to be a terrible election.
Our viable choices were grim.
Those who said Davis should have been allowed to stay in, may have been right.
Of course we may never have seen another Republican in the California Governor’s mansion too. Fact is, we didn’t with Schwarzenegger either.
I do think Schwarzenegger had a glimmer of a chance to do the right thing, but with so many RINOs coaching him otherwise, I don’t think he had a chance.
It’s also true, he didn’t have the stones to do the right things. He couldn’t see it clearly enough.
The kind of things I heard about him were more grab-ass than anything, not that I approve of it.
As for his nanny, what are you going to do.
One man wants California to be part of Mexico. Another wants to spend us into oblivion. The third didn’t know what he wanted to do.
As I said, a real mess.
