A court in south central Vietnam on Thursday rejected jailed blogger Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynhs appeal of her 10-year prison sentence for publishing politically sensitive material online, prompting condemnation from watchdogs who called the hearing a farce and demanded her immediate release.
The Peoples Court of Khanh Hoa province, in Nha Trang city, took three hours to uphold the conviction of Quynhalso known by her blogger handle Me Nam, or Mother Mushroomwho was arrested Oct. 10, 2016 while on her way to visit a fellow rights campaigner in prison and sentenced in June to a decade in jail on charges of spreading propaganda against the state under Article 88 of Vietnams Penal Code.

Perhaps we should stop Trading with Countries who do not allow Freedom. How many would be on the List
Perhaps we should.
Do not think the President was very comfortable when he was there, Prayed much for him during that trip, those people are Evil and have no alliance to anyone but VIET NAM
But the argument can be made that western investment invariably liberalizes
In a classical sense
I suppose , want to elaborate
You mean like China?
They are a much bigger challenge than Vietnam.
Both are communist. China, and Vietnam.
One has a billion people, is running a massive trade surplus against America, shuts out American competition while doing so, and is aggressively challenging America in nuclear weapons and military matters.
The other, fought a war against us 50 years ago. Won that, and hasn’t really bothered us since.
About anything.
And to tell the truth, sort of like America, from what I’ve seen.
For real.
It’s no guarantee but when totalitarian nations allow in western capitalism capital investment it tends to have a liberalizing effect however imperfect
If we don’t do that then we just wait for a total collapse which we hope will be replaced by something better which may not be
Of course Vietnam is unlikely to become Singapore anytime soon but less likely to revert to more totalitarianism
If you look at the track records of how communist and dictatorial nations evolve once any economic self determination is introduced
Standards of living rise and so does freedom however imperfect by our jaded comparison
Imagine neo Stalinist Hanoi of 1965 with today
Or Maoist China with today
Better than before however flawed
Had we not invested it would not have been as possible or others like the French who never hold back would have
Thanks for input always enjoy reading your posts, do not always agree totally but a bit of wisdom always.
It doesn’t seem to be working in Viet Nam or China. IMO, America should never be afraid to defend freedom. We should embrace any opportunity to show the world that we do stand for freedom and we will have your back if you do too.
It’s a helluva a lot better than without it
It’s better than without it
I know freepers detest nuance in general
Compare Vietnam 1975 with now
The inevitability of western influence and practical needs by the commies created this
I guess we coulda waited them out and walled them off
But that doesn’t seem to work well either
See Norks
Our form of civilization in beehive oriental culture takes fine tuning we may not like
Of course who are we to judge anyone
We gave up our sovereignty to invaders and socialist in our own woodpile with nary a whimper
So far
Thanks for the kind words
Selling the ropes
Are they any worse than China?
We would be wise to lean on Vietnam to open up.
I remember the last time we leaned on VN - didn’t work out as planned. Having said that maybe Bourdain can quietly return to Hanoi and negociate for her release.
I’d be surprised if we are not
Western investment is a start
It’s like what trade once was when the West visited Asian unknowns
