Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello Nevares last month asked federal taxpayers to shell out $94 billion to pay for the territorys recovery from Hurricane Maria then turned around and paid out about $100 million in Christmas bonuses to island government employees.
The governors aides say the bonuses are a longstanding tradition and part of the law, and were planned for in the budget approved last summer.
But that budget came well before Hurricanes Irma and Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, leaving much of the territory in ruin and leaving the government begging for federal assistance.
The islands financial oversight board, created by Congress as part of a deal to bail the government out of a potential debt default last year, called the payments imprudent and said the hurricanes should have forced the governor to rethink his decisions.
And the payments could dent Mr. Rossello Nevares efforts to get Capitol Hill to pony up for the recovery, where the $94 billion price tag the island has set is already meeting with shock.

Geez. It’s like I should pray for a hurricaine here in SW Ohio.
"Insane" might be a better choice of words!!!!
It’s just the way liberals work.
No shame. Didn’t even raise a flag for them. Business as usual.
100 MIL!?? Sweet saints of WTF! How many guv workers are there to split that jackpot? Eff PR.
Typical LIB/Commie behavior.
Oh. Well, that's different.
If my wife and I sat down to set up our family budget in January and decide we are buying a swimming pool, our house gets flattened in a storm, and I lose my job, well, we are still going to buy that pool!
Right?

Time for Puerto Rico experience independence.
Budget approval????
No money for you!
Just another liberal gimme welfare state -— JUST SAY NO!!!
Raise your hand if you’re surprised at the corruption in PR. Anyone? Nope, didn’t think so.
Hell yes! You should add to the design, put in a cabana bar and a nice outdoor kitchen while you are at it! Great analogy, by the way. What pisses me off is that they are taking money out of my pocket and my kids pocket for their freaking bonuses.
Of course. Graft and corruption is the reason the American company was promptly fired and PR companies hired.
And if Puerto Rico does not get the 94 Billion they have asked for, President Trump will be savaged in the press and media for not supporting them and the Christians will be hammered for not housing the poor like Jesus said.
Time (actually past time) for PR to be independent. goodbye and good luck.
Thanks!
Heck, that is what drives any thinking person crazy about this.
If it was all built into their own budget, self contained, and they weren’t expecting anything from US, we would just say “Ok. Knock yourself out. Buy the cabana bar too and outdoor kitchen while you are at it.”
But they expect us to pay for it...and we likely will.
This should be the headline of every paper everywhere, at least for one day.
