And, BTW, in our Oklahoma County, the head law enforcement officers made a principled decision to NOT seek civil forfeiture unless there was a direct connection between the property seized and the purported crime THAT RESULTED IN A CONVICTION. They were criticized by others for simply following Constitutional safeguards.

cops used to get a lot of assets on forfeiture. When i worked for the CYA in Stockton, we loaned our dogs to the Sheriff. They got a big score about 3 months later and asked us what we needed. Computers and a small truck were on the table. i took the truck and we converted it to a canine vehicle. It wasn’t in our budget. It was a transfer from the sheriff’s department, all I had to do was add it to our equipment list. . No one ever came back to us for the vehicle.
