There would be some controversy, but it would be pretty obvious which would be the strongest three. Eventually, stronger teams would join stronger conferences.

Lame answer. The current system is still far better than what came before. The problem is that we have college athletes in a violent contact sport playing more and more games. In order to get to the championship game, we have teams playing 14 games. It takes it toll on the players and the quality of the games. Expanding the championship to 8 teams and three games will not remove the controversy over who should be in the final 8.

March Madness expands the field in basketball, but there are still controversies over who should be included in the field. And despite the Cinderellas who achieve upsets, the Championship game is usually between two teams from the power conferences, Gonzaga, Butler, and George Mason aside.
