World War 3 fears: North Korea launches ICBM - South Korea FIRES missile back

NORTH Korea has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), sparking a ferocious "precision strike" rocket response from South Korea.

North Korea launched the missile at around 3am local time (6pm GMT), sparking a furious response from Seoul.

Within minutes of North Korea's ICBM launch, South Korea had fired its own missile launch in retaliation.

The North Korean missile was fired eastwards from the hermit state. The missile landed about 210km west of Japan's Kyurokujima island, Tokyo said.

Japanese media reports the missile was in the air for 50 minutes - indicating a very high altitude flight path.

It travelled east for around 620 miles and to an altitude of 2,500 miles before crashing into the Sea of Japan.

US leader Donald Trump was briefed on the missile while it was still in the air.

This late-night launch is rare, with most taking place during daylight hours.

A South Korean military official said earlier this evening: “We confirm that we have detected a North Korean ballistic missile launch. The missile is still travelling towards the direction to the East Sea, as we are monitoring right now.

Um... Small problem here. We destroyed all of the Pershing 2 missiles with the START treaty with the Soviet Union back in the 80s. We don’t have any more of them left, and I think that the plans for them have been destroyed, along with the tools to make them.
Not to mention, I don’t think there’s anybody left in the Army who knows how to use the things. The MOS for that one (15E) was gone a long time ago, and I’m not sure how many of them are left.

You forgot “parasitic worm-infested” when describing his army.

What the heck is a “precision strike”?

They were able to hit the ocean.

Maybe not, but we have many ships there several of which are individually capable of lighting up the NORKs, completely obliterating the country.

Then there are the carriers.

I specifically stated a “new, modern version of the Pershing II”.

Of course I’m not sure how that platform could be improved...8,000 mph, 1 ton payload delivered with a CEP of 30 meters. Solid fuel from a mobile launcher.

1,100 mile range. It get’s to the limit of its range in 10 minutes due to its low apogee.

How much better could you make it?

Simply re-invent it. And give it to South Korea and Japan to produce as many as they want.

Former PM Suzuki, in an off-hand comment to a reporter once said, “If on a Monday Japan decides it needs nuclear weapons, by Friday we will have them.”

Many interpreted that as meaning Japan has nuclear weapons but not assembled and not in one location, but ready to be called upon on a short notice....................

Fatboy has no idea what the hell he is doing.

The defector that was shot but survived last week reportedly was infected with parasites which hindered and complicated the medical procedures to save his life.

If this is an example of the desperation on the NK military, then I predict that one brave or desperate military officer will take him out one way or another........................

As in 1950, the Norks see a US Military weakened by years of budget cuts . They see a military bloated at the top with garrison officers and generals unfit for real combat. Grandfather Kim was correct in this perception.

The current Kim misinterprets not only history but the current President. The US Navy can destroy all of North Korea in a matter of hours. The recent defector probably brings the message that the troops are not in agreement with their commanders. They prefer the good life in Seoul rather than starvation

I’m sure they have.

The artillery will be neutralized first thing.

What the NK army doesn’t realize is that the US/SK military knows the exact location of each and every one of those installations and can precision time coordinated launches of missiles and bombers to be on targets all at the same time and Poof! they are gone........................

Many believe Japan already has nukes.......................

I was told back in early70" " that Japan was a screwdriver away from having operational nukes" ......meaning they had all necessary components, just in different buildings

SK launched a Hyunmoo-2C from Goseong, 6 minutes after the NK launch.

The missile has fins, like the Pershing II missile, making it able to be terminally guided with an accuracy of potentially 1 to 5 meters.

That means it can penetrate hard targets, such as command and control bunkers....

I believe you and hope that they get them all within minutes of open hostilities. The mobile launches will be the main targets then. I have heard that the US has developed drone swarm tactics that uses AI to travel the countryside and take out targets of opportunity. Might be just propaganda to frighten prospective enemies but I like the concept.

I should have been clearer - launched what at what target? I later found out they just launched a couple of missiles off into the water... I was wondering if they had attempted to shoot down the NK missile, took out ground sites, etc... As an attention getter, their headline did attract this reader LOL.

Well, ok. But I’m a naval aviation man.

A massive raid with planes from three carriers can hit selected minor targets while the biggie destroy Pyongyang thus making the destruction total
