The prominent placement of an Andrew Jackson portrait during an event meant to honor a group of Native Americans at the Oval Office on Monday has raised questions about the White House’s message.
Jackson is known for his harsh treatment of Native Americans as president, famously signing the Indian Removal Act, which led to thousands of Native American deaths as tens of thousands were forced to relocate. Some observers thought the juxtaposition of his portrait during the event with the stated purpose of honoring three Navajo code talkers was strange.

The Cherokees called Jackson "Indian killer"; the Creek called him "Sharp Knife."
A slave owner, Jackson spoke about Native Americans as if they were an inferior group of people. "Established in the midst of a superior race," he said of the Cherokee, "they must disappear."

Trump's affinity for Jackson has long been a facet of his public image as a politician. He lambasted an Obama administration plan, which has not yet taken effect, to remove Jackson from the $20 bill in favor of abolitionist Harriet Tubman, referring to Jackson during the presidential campaign as someone with "a history of tremendous success for the country." And just days after his inauguration in January, Trump selected a portrait of Jackson in the Oval Office. In March, he stopped by the Hermitage, Jackson’s home in Tennessee, to lay a wreath at the former president's tomb. The president’s former chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, lauded Trump’s inauguration address as "Jacksonian."

It’s my understanding that some are very adamant about not using $20 bills. I’ve not personally encountered any that are vocal about it even though I’m in OK, home to the tribes Jackson moved out of the southeast.
I wonder how many know that Jackson adopted an Indian baby after the battle of Horse Shoe Bend?
I suspect that Jackson saw a bit of himself in the orphaned baby.
I heard Andrew Jackson still votes as a DEM.
But as Jim Thorpe reputedly said after decking a drunk and belligerent Errol Flynn on the set of They Died With Their Boots On, "Custer's $#!+ is still weak".

The Post’s article completely misses an important point. Until nearly the end of the Indian Wars, Indians did not class themselves as ‘Indians’ but rather as Navajo, Hopi, Apache, Cherokee, etc. Jackson had nothing to do with the Navajos and I’d be surprised if Navajos have much of a beef with him.
Cherokee do not refer to themselves as “Cherokee”...The white man does...

If I am not mistaken, this is the same portrait of Jackson that Harry Truman had in his Oval Office.
Anybody notice any of those old veterans complaining about Jackson's picture? I didn't.
Eli Rosenberg, the author seems to be a social justice warrior. Of course Eli used it as a platform to criticize Trump.
Just maybe Trump is not ashamed of our national heritage. How many Indians did the Navajo kill?

I always liked the idea of Harriet Tubman, a black woman Republican that was a pro second amendment Christian. Perfect replacement for the founder of the Democratic slave owning party.
They refer to two tribes but not the Navajo. Maybe the Navajo don’t care about those tribes. Isn’t it racist to lump all native Americans together?
The word “Cherokee” came from the white man bastardizing the word “Tsalagi” (the “ts” is sounded “cha”)...
The Muskogee Creek called Ani-Yun-Wiya the Tsalagi, which in their language meant “people of different tongue”...
My ancestors were known to torture their captives, Andrew Jackson won the war with them. Neither had much to do with Trump honoring the people he was with.
Liberals have to search the walls to find things to micro agress over while ignoring what is actually happening. Trump, the president of the UNITED STATES was honoring some of its citizens that in the past were war hero’s that played a curtail part in winning the war against a fascist takeover.
Much more recent history, and far more revelant. As I demonstrated, if house look, you can always find things to be offended over. But reporters should stick to the subject, not search for excuses to slander in the name of editorial licence.
Cherokee were slave owners too, even fought for the Confederacy. So, let’s not get all carried away here, mkay? The Trail Of Tears was awful and wrong, it was done just because gold fever had struck and they wanted the land where it had been found. NC was the leading gold producer in the country prior to the California gold rush, people tend to forget that or never even knew it in the first place. The federal government broke treaty after treaty with them. But, Jackson wasn’t an entirely bad President despite that rather colossal and cruel edict. The Navajo likely experienced nothing due to Jackson’s Presidency. They certainly weren’t on the Trail Of Tears. But, to the left all indians look alike and have the same grievances. Trump’s the prejudiced one in their little fever swamp, though.
The name Cherokee is a corruption and Anglicization of “Tcholoki” (spellings vary) which is a Creek word meaning people who speak another language.
