House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) backtracked on Monday evening from her previous defense of Rep. John Conyers (D., Mich.) by describing his behavior against Melanie Sloan in the 1990's as "unacceptable and disappointing."
Pelosi released a statement after meeting with Sloan, a prominent Washington, D.C. lawyer who previously worked with Conyers as the minority counsel to the House Judiciary Committee from 1995 until 1998. Sloan alleged last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when they worked together.
"This afternoon, I spoke with Melanie Sloan who worked for Congressman Conyers on the Judiciary Committee in the mid-1990s," Pelosi said. "Ms. Sloan told me that she had publicly discussed distressing experiences while on his staff. I find the behavior Ms. Sloan described unacceptable and disappointing. I believe what Ms. Sloan has told me."
"Ms. Sloan, as a respected ethics expert and attorney, also gave me valuable feedback into the substantive reforms many of us in Congress are advocating to foster a climate of respect and dignity, and to protect legislative branch employees," Pelosi added.
Pelosi went on to say that she has not had the opportunity to speak to the other four women who have alleged Conyers sexually harassed them. She noted that one of the women could not speak publicly because of the "secretive settlement process in place."
"That ridiculous system must be ended and victims who want to come forward to the Ethics Committee must be able to do so," Pelosi concluded.
While Pelosi backtracked away from her defense of Conyers a day earlier, CNN reporter MJ Lee noted on Twitter that Pelosi doesn't include anything in her statement about what the repercussions should be for Conyers.
MJ Lee ✔ @mj_lee Worth noting that in this statement, in which Pelosi says Conyers behavior is unacceptable, theres no mention of what, if anything, she believes should happen to Conyers now https://twitter.com/mj_lee/status/935296196150792192 7:00 PM - Nov 27, 2017
She also noted that one of Pelosi's aides told her that Pelosi still believes "the ethics investigation should continue" into Conyers.

And yet he still sits in the people’s house.
Way past her bedtime.
Disgusting that ignorant Democrat voters saddle our government with geriatric Leftists such as Conyers and Pelosi. This awful situation was the reason the Founders wanted the USA to be a republic, not a democracy.

CONYERS—88
PELOSI—77
Just because [@RepJohnConyers] is accused - and was it one accusation? Is it two?I do not know who they are. Do you? They have not really come forward.
When a Congesscritter says the behavior of one of their own is “unacceptable”, I know it will be excused.
John Conyers Disorientation and Nancy Pelosis Strategic Obliviousness

The first Morning Jolt of the week features Senator Al Frankens implausible claim that hes a victim of a witch hunt against hugs, a discussion of that big New York Times profile of a white nationalist and how it revealed more than the editors thought, and revelations about Congressman John Conyers disorientation and Nancy Pelosis strategic obliviousness:
Congressman John Conyers should have been removed from office a long time ago, for his own good: He has already handed over much of the day-to-day committee work to staff aides and other Democratic members in recent years, and has often appeared disoriented.
In at least two separate occasions once at a United Automobile Workers event in Michigan and once at a meeting of top Democrats on Capitol Hill Mr. Conyers showed up wearing pajamas, according to two people familiar with the incidents. A spokeswoman for Mr. Conyers said she had no knowledge this ever occurred.
When members of Congress are exhibiting signs of dementia or Alzheimers, and no one around them takes steps to ease them out of governing responsibilities stop asking why Americans dont have more faith in their leaders! Our old colleague Tim Alberta observed last week, John Conyers has not been all there, mentally, for some time. Every top Dem in MI and DC knows that.
You wouldnt let your grandpa operate heavy machinery if he started wandering around in his pajamas. Why did Democrats allow Conyers to keep operating as ranking member of the Judiciary Committee all this time? Forget stepping down as ranking member on the committee; he does not belong in Congress, for his own good.
How the hell does Nancy Pelosi not know that the guy set to run the Judiciary Committee is wandering the halls of Congress in his pajamas? How does she not do something about that?
Yesterday morning, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd asked Pelosi, Do you believe John Conyers accusers? She responded, I dont know who they are. Do you? They have not really come forward.
As Perry Bacon of FiveThirtyEight.com observed, Seriously? One of them talked to the Washington Post. Another filed a lawsuit against Conyers. A third reached a settlement with him.
Back in 2012, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, then chair of the Democratic National Committee, had a simple solution for dealing with the question and moral complications of President Obamas kill list for drone strikes: She simply didnt read about it and acted like it didnt exist, telling reporters, I have no idea what youre talking about even though it had been reported upon, in detail, on the front page of the New York Times. The easiest way to deal with difficult or inconvenient information is to simply never encounter or acknowledge it.
She was for him before she was against him.
...and the pendulous thread pulling begins...
Pelosi Chokes, Won’t Condemn Conyers on Meet the Press
Maybe she was on him before she was off him.
We have to read the indictment to know what’s in it.
Unacceptable and disappointing is when you order fries with your meal and they forget them.....
We have 2 highly qualified African Americans running in the Republican Primary to unseat Debbie Stabenow in the Senate, Judge Bob Young and Businessman and Veteran John James....
Can we convince one of these two fine gentlemen to run in Conyer's District aka the Michigan 13th? Either Conyer's steps down or the DNC is probably scrambling for a replacement, my guess is he isn't all their upstairs, they got to do something and fast. So why not get a decent "R" on the ballot and fight for this seat....
People always speak the truth the first time, the backtrack is almost always a lie.
Shows us all how pathetic, lethargic and mentally ill they all are
Thanks for that.
