Donald Trump has been criticised for using a racial slur during an event honouring Native American veterans.
The US president was welcoming three Navajo code talkers from the Second World War to the Oval Office on Monday afternoon when he referred to Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic senator, as "Pocahontas".
During remarks praising their service, he said: "You were here long before any of us were here. Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what, I like you."
Two Second World War Navajo "code talkers" stood at the podium, with a third seated in a wheelchair as Mr Trump made the remarks, which were greeted with awkward silence.
They were among 29 young volunteers from the Navajo tribe who joined the Marines in 1942 and created a secret code for the military using the Navajo language as a code.
The president has repeatedly mocked the Massachusetts senator for claims she made about being part Native American.

I happen to agree with you. Code Talkers deserved their time with the President to be a respectful meeting, without any jokes, slams, name calling. It’s not funny to me at all, it’s not the time nor the place for comments about Warren.
We didn’t like Obama’s slams and jokes against Tea Party folks, Christians, Bible holders, gun clingers, the middle finger scratching his nose episodes.

Elizabeth Warren is guilty of racial oppression of the Native American she stole a job from.
Does it matter that he didn’t mention her name? He called her that while campaigning then after he became President. Anyone with half a brain know who he was referencing.
It wasn’t the time or the place. Those were highly respected Indian Vets who saved many lives and their President shouldn’t have given that Pocahontas the same stage and made her newsworthy in the media’s eyes.
Plus she wasn’t even claiming to be a Navajo.
My great great grand=mother was full blooded blackfoot Indian. I find no humor in President’s comments. It was the Code Talkers time to be honored and recognized and given dignity and respect. I feel it was sullied with our President bringing up Pocahontas and taking the spotlight off these brave Vets.

While dismantling the Consumer Finance Bureau, Trump has entirely sidelined its creator and removed her from the discussion. All she can do now is answer questions about being an Indian or not.

I have no comment on how you feel about it. All I can do is reiterate how I would feel under the circumstances. If I were Native American, and some lying white woman whose ancestors had killed mine, advanced her career by pretending to be part Native American, I would be happy to see her called out.
But, it was not about her today. It was off topic and inappropriate.
