One Night in Florida (a liberal Canadian finally gets it - kinda)
The Globe and Mail ^ | 11/22/17 | JEAN BLACKLOCK

It's been over a year since the American election and what we hear in Canada coming from our old neighbour to the South is a thrum of discontent, not really about any single issue (they change so fast), more like baleful glaring across a great divide on everything.

Some days, we read news from the United States and congratulate ourselves on our tolerance and inclusiveness, on our Prime Minister's socks, on our acting in a way that the States doesn't seem to know how to do.

But mostly, it feels as if we've lost something that we didn't know we liked. We miss the American patriotism that seemed to rise above whatever Americans argued about. We miss the stature the U.S. President had around the world, an ability that crossed party lines to respond with dignity when bad things happened. Now, disagreements in the United States seem intractable, personal and political in the worst ways, it's not just politicians hurling rhetoric, even late-night comedians have lost their sense of humour.

Recently, my husband, Andrew, and I were in Florida. We noticed during friendly idle chats in line at Starbucks or in hotel elevators that mentioning we were Canadian prompted a sheepish grin and a comment such as, "Canada, yeah, it's a good place … especially now." The last two words were often a sigh. We'd feel awkward, wanting to say the right thing, to make them feel better.

But in division there are two sides. We knew that other Americans we bumped into thought differently about our nationality, maybe even pitying us for our health-care system with our hospital patients apparently lined up out the door.

The Keystone XL was blocked for a long time. Big construction projects don’t get built in a day.

I noticed nearly all the sponsors at the Calgary Stampede were American brands.
American whisky, Coors beer, various tobacco items, all made in the USA...

Wish you guys wouldn’t stereotype we Canadians so much. Your assessment is mostly right, but there are plenty of us who are more American in spirit than your lefties are.
Mostly but not exclusively in the West.
That said, I also detest those smug Canadians. But I detest smugness in general and am smugly sure I’m above smugness myself.

And anyone who disagrees with me is a Neanderthal.

Wait....

Here in Detroit I worked with a number of Canadians. The last one was one of my managers who transferred to our corporate office from our manuf. plant in Kitchener, Ont. where he was their HR manager.

We hit it off right away when he found out I was a firearm and hunting enthusiast since he was from either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and an avid moose hunter.......He was extremely envious our our lack of firearm restrictions as opposed to what Canada has on theirs. I only worked for him for about a year before he was sent back to Kitchener and I missed him after he left.

“there are plenty of us who are more American in spirit than your lefties are”

And for that, I am thankful. We need more conservatives in both our countries.

I would die to defend Canada for that reason. I tear up at “true patriot love in all thy sons command.”

We stand on guard for thee.

I am surprised to hear that. With a feast to choose from that includes Molson’s, Moosehead, Calgary Export Ale, why anyone would choose Schlitz or PBR is a head shaker.

Yikes. Did the disastrous NDP stint in Ontario not leave a lasting mark? How bad the Alberta government must have been to put socialists in power. What a horror.

The Maritimes would be smug if they had anything to be smug about. Without ‘equalization’ payments, they would have a lifestyle little better than Bangladesh.

In googling around, I found this nugget...

“Six provinces will receive equalization payments in 2016-17: Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.”
http://thoughtundermined.com/2012/04/24/equalization-misconceptions/

The only provinces to not get transfer payments are British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. That’d be like Kansas, Utah, and New Mexico subsidizing New York, Texas, California and Florida. That’s just crazy.

Yep, and Albertans are just lovin’ it, right?

Yep, the difference in Canadia is that the tax payers pay for their own fake news! Keeps them ignorant and smug, dumber than dirt.

Lest we be too smug about that ... we have NPR and PBS, although they don’t really qualify as MSM. There is also some evidence surfacing lately that the MSM may be receiving some payoffs from government officials for their cooperative #FakeNews products.

/end preaching to the choir ;-)

What a POS venomous screed!

It's clear that Canada, mostly populated by the traitorous outcasts from the American Revolution, hasn't changed one bit!

Did the disastrous NDP stint in Ontario not leave a lasting mark?

It did with some of us. In fact some people don't have to go through it to know how bad socialism can be.

"How bad the Alberta government must have been to put socialists in power."

I don't know how bad the previous government was. It doesn't matter. The media and the school system is determined to turn the population leftward. Propaganda works with young people and immigrants who do not have the life experience to deal with it. The voters feel the "need for a change" and they will not be denied, no matter how bad it can get.
