I read somewhere that the NORK guards were firing AK carbines although the agreement was to carry only pistols in that area.
I’ve lived in the suburbs of a big city all of my life, and have only occasionally been able to really see STARS.
The stars have been a comfort to us all of our existence, and visible to most except for the last century or so. Stars, and the symbology that they’ve engendered, have played a part in the development of our ancient religions and philosophies.
The joy and wonder of seeing them is atavistic within ‘human beans’; and I can imagine that suddenly not seeing them can be another disturbing element of a strange, new experience.
Unless you are a top general, you are a starving soldier. A walk-in sick is a harder target to hit.
Was stationed in West Berlin during the 80’s and remember reading articles about the same thing happening to East Germans escaping to West Germany. Many had a very hard time adjusting to life in the West. Biggest problem was in making basic decisions, where to live, what job to have, etc. I read there were even a few instances of defectors returning to East Germany.
I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that under totalitarian systems so many decisions are made FOR the individual; suddenly having to make choices in so many areas must be confusing.
