Presenting false documentary evidence to impugn the character of another is criminal fraud and in most states criminal libel. It is called “uttering a false document” in old English law. The act and its intent prove malice as well, and can support a criminal prosecution and a civil case. (Presenting false documents in court is a ground for disbarment.)

In an action of slander or libel, if a retraction as provided in Section 6-5-184 shall be published in such medium within 10 days of the date of the publication, then the plaintiff in such case shall recover only actual damages.
