This is a dumb question, but where is the US military fighting Isis?
Syria and Iraq. We’ve been providing artility supprot for allied ground troops for quite a while.
Before the line becomes Malfunction Junction let me say:
“Artillery; lending dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.”
81’s Aweigh!
Semper Fi
The US has had superior artillery since WWII. Between the world wars the red legs at Fort Sill did their homework and really figured out advanced fire direction control, among other things. Everything since then has built on that foundation.
Remember St Barbara’s Day is coming up Fast.
While the story may be true, there is absolutely nothing in the article backing up the claim nor are any numbers posted or even approximations. The only part of note is the burning out of two arty tubes - a story covered in depth over on the Drive.
I have always disagreed with that idiot direction - and artillery battalions were used as "provisional infantry" or "Military Police" battalions and told to keep the howitzers in the gunpark.
“a story covered in depth over on the Drive.”
Link? What’s the Drive?
My only thought on the matter is that I hope we didn't expend too many of those ultra expensive Excalibur rounds at $70,000 per shot when the usual $700 dumb ones just sat idly by and could have done it for far less cost.
:) better to do your job without “image”, eh? It’s good when we hear that they did a great job rather than hearing when and where they are going before they even pack.
My oldest brother served with the 5th. Marine Division, 3rd. Battalion Lima Company as a 1st. Lieutenant in field artillery in the late ‘70s. Doesn’t surprise me the Marines are giving lots of sand goblins dirt naps. It’s what they do best.
I don’t know, but the stinking dc post doesn’t care if anyone knows where the Marines are...
“The Marine artillery unit, though unnamed in the video, probably came from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The howitzer battery is providing fire support along with guided rocket artillery to U.S.-backed Syrian fighters battling the Islamic State in their de-facto capital of Raqqa. Open-source imagery has geo-located the Marine artillery within 10 miles of Raqqa, meaning even the unguided shells fired from the units howitzers will land somewhat accurately depending on weather.”
FTA: Army Sgt.Maj. John Troxell, the senior enlisted adviser to Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the Pentagon earlier this month that Marines had fired so many artillery rounds in rapid succession that they burned out the barrels of two M777 howitzers — a far from easy feat
Fire for effect!
Their training was good (I’m surprised zero authorized it)...from Jan 2016
It’s all fun and games until there’s a drop short heh.
I shouldn’t laugh, my buddy did lose most of his leg to a drop short. He still plays hockey though, must be a stubborn Albertan.
60s and 81s and even TOW are still all considered part of an infantry battalions weapons systems today. We leave the 105 and 155s to the artillery.
good question
and which jihadists is the pentagon fighting ?
the CIA funded jihadis ?
or the John McCain funded jihadists ?
or maybe the Mossad funded jihadists ?
or possibly the pentagon funded jihadists ?
difficult to tell
