Stephen Willeford, Hero of Sutherland First Baptist Church Gunfight

This morning, November, 10th, 2017 I was listening to KBLU 560, in Yuma, Arizona. American Morning News came on at 0943. It was a short segment. I did not have a recorder going, but I heard this report near the end of the segment.  I believe it is fairly accurate, certainly the sense of it. I could not find a transcript of it on the Internet.

After a report on heroics at the Sutherland First Baptist Church, in Texas, the scene of a horrific mass murder, this was the report:

The gunman died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound after being chased by bystanders, after he crashed his car.

Notice that everything stated is true, such as it is. This is a case of lying by omission.  It is particularly egregious because the report was about heroics at the church. The mass murderer may have died of a self inflicted gun shot wound after crashing his car, and being chased by “bystanders”; what is left out is important, vital, to the story.

What is left out is one of the men in the chase vehicle was involved in a gunfight with the murderer, where he wounded the murderer at least twice. One of the survivors of the massacre credits the intervention of the neighbor with saving her life. From the washingtonpost.com:

“Then she thought that it was her turn,” David Brown told The Post. “She just started praying.”

Name of murderer removed

At that moment, she heard a shot fired from a different man, at the front door.

The other man was Stephen Willeford, who lives near the church. Willeford, a certified shooting instructor,

Stephen Willeford was an NRA firearms instructor who engaged the mass murderer in a gunfight, wounded the murderer at least twice, then recruited another volunteer to pursue the murderer.

There’s at least one long detailed interview online, well worth watching. Hero in every sense.

And Mr. Willeford used his AR-15 style rifle to end the slaughter.

Last I heard, the preacher still doesn’t want parishioners to carry inside the new church. If so, Willeford will need to move to the new location if they’re to have any protection from the next monster.

That leaves out something even bigger. While he was being pursued, the gunman called his father, told him he’d been shot, and said he didn’t think he was going to make it.

‘Kelley called his father while he was being chased and told him he had been shot and “didn’t think he was going to make it,” officials said at Monday’s press conference.”

It is in the story, but not in the excerpt.

Oops; you caught me. I didn’t follow the link.

The way it sounds to me is that Kelly crashed and killed himself because he’d been seriously injured. I.e.: he thought he was dying anyway (and may well have been right), so he merely took control of the process and sped it up a little.

No problem.

The point of the story is to show the blatant partisanship of America’s Morning News.

I am thinking of recording a segment every morning and pointing out the partisanship. There is a blatant example almost every day.

No doubt, just watch CBS this morning, it's non-stop anti-Trump spin.

Agree with you on that! The bias is off the charts. The Sutherland shooting brought out more partisanship than usual. It’s terrible.
