The Gary Hinman Murder

Gary Hinman was held hostage in his own home, the weekend of July 25th, 1969, by Bobby Beausoleil, Susan Atkins, and Mary Brunner, when he refused to give the group money they thought he had.

The weekend included a brief visit from Charles Manson that began with Manson slashing Hinman across the face with a sword.

Finally on Sunday evening, after Hinman signed over the pink slips to his two cars, Beausoleil stabbed him twice in the heart.”

When they got in the house, Susan [Atkins] said that in the living room there was a man on the couch and a woman on the chair reading. Then some of Susan's group stayed in the living room, while Susan went into the bedroom where Sharon was sitting on the bed talking to Jay Sebring. They quickly put nooses over Sharon and Jay's heads so that if they moved they would choke.

Frykowski ran for the door. "He was full of blood," she said and claimed that she had stabbed him three or four times. "He was bleeding and he ran to the front part, and would you believe that he was there hollering 'Help, help, somebody please help me,' and nobody came? Then we finished him off."

"Sharon was the last to die," Susan said with a laugh as she described how Sharon was begging her, " Please don't kill me. Please don't kill me. I don't want to die. I want to live. I want to have my baby. I want to have my baby."

Susan said she just looked at Sharon straight in the eye and said, "Look, bitch, I don't care about you. I don't care if you're going to have a baby. You had better be ready. You're going to die and I don't feel anything about it...In a few minutes I killed her."

Susan said she saw that there was Sharon's blood on her hand and she tasted it. "Wow, what a trip! To taste death, and yet give life."

"When police arrived at the LaBianca murder scene, they found various words written in blood. On the living room walls, there was "rise" and "death to pigs." Carved into Leno LaBianca's stomach was "war." Alone these seem to give no clue, but another writing on the refrigerator did. It was the incorrectly spelt "healter skelter." This led some investigators to believe the writings may have been influenced by the so-called "White Album" by the Beatles which included the song "Helter Skelter." Another song on the album, "Blackbird," used the word "arise" which may have inspired the bloody use of "rise."

The phase "death to pigs" was likely inspired by the Beatles' song "Piggies." Had police made the connection, they would have realized that "pig" was used in the previous murders at the Gary Hinman and Sharon Tate houses. At Hinman's, bloody writing said "political piggie" while "pig" was written at the Tate house."

Manson Follower Reveals Gruesome Details of Mutilation at Spahn Ranch

Donald “Shorty” Shea was sliced from his armpit to his collarbone while Manson crime partners repeatedly stabbed and clubbed him.

Gov. Jerry Brown Friday reversed a state panel’s parole recommendation for former Charles Manson follower Bruce Davis, finding he “poses a danger to society if released from prison.”

Followers of Charles Manson lived at Chatsworth’s Spahn Ranch.

In a six-page document, Brown wrote, “As our Supreme Court has acknowledged, in rare circumstances, a murder is so heinous that it provides evidence of current dangerousness by itself. This is such a case.”

The governor noted that Davis has “made efforts to improve himself while incarcerated” and commended him “for taking these positive steps,” but found they are “outweighed by negative factors that demonstrate he remains unsuitable for parole.”

Davis, now 70, was convicted of the two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and robbery in connection with the July 25, 1969, stabbing death of musician Gary Hinman in his Topanga Canyon home and the stabbing and beheading of Spahn ranch hand Donald “Shorty” Shea some time between Aug. 16 and Sept. 1, 1969. Shea was last seen alive Aug. 27, 1969.

“Davis played a central role in these murders. He was a part of the (Manson) Family’s discussions to rob and kill Mr. Hinman,” the governor wrote, noting that Davis “now admits that he pointed the gun at Mr. Hinman while Manson mutilated Mr. Hinman’s face.”

“... He was also a part of the family’s discussions to kill Mr. Shea. Davis and the others surrounded and viciously attacked Mr. Shea. Davis now states he sliced Mr. Shea from his armpit to his collarbone while his crime partners repeatedly stabbed and clubbed Mr. Shea. He later bragged about how Mr. Shea’s body had been dismembered and decapitated,” the governor wrote.

Davis had previously stated that he made a “token cut” to an already-dead Shea under pressure from Manson, according to the governor’s decision. ...”
