Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) said he opposes the Senate Republican tax package, becoming the first GOP voice of dissent that, if it gains momentum, could force significant changes or jeopardize the partys goal to pass the bill before the end of the year.
If they can pass it without me, let them, Mr. Johnson said in an interview Wednesday, adding that the plan unfairly benefits corporations more than other types of businesses. Im not going to vote for this tax package.
Any Republican opposition is significant because GOP leaders are counting on near universal support from within the party to pass a bill on party line votes. With 52 seats in the Senate, Republicans can lose no more than two votes unless they can somehow find a way to win votes from Democrats.
Other Senate Republicans have expressed concerns. Jeff Flake of Arizona, for example, has worried about deficits and Susan Collins of Maine has worried about Republican plans to repeal the insurance coverage mandate in the Affordable Care Act as part of a tax overhaul.
Until now, no Senate Republican has come out definitively against the GOP tax plan. The risk for GOP leaders is that other Republicans get behind Mr. Johnsons opposition, and either stop the bill or slow its passage, depriving Republicans of the chance to boost after-tax income household income next year, during the elections.
Still, in a statement issued in the late afternoon, Mr. Johnson said he hoped that Republicans could address the disparity so he could support the final version of the tax bill. Such changes could be expensive and might force tax writers to make other changes. .

“Because big business donates more to the GOP scum in Congress.”
I prefer to refer to them as toilet scum.
She was right about that, Romney does suck.
We all know that is how they are financing this tax cut orgy for the corporations - on the backs of everyone else.
They have given away the store to the corporate cuts so badly that they had to look for loose change by eliminating virtually every single deduction that individual filers claim.
And still it isn't enough.
The plan is for the House members to vote for the bill (even those Congressmen from NJ, NY, IL, CA, etc that know it will screw their constituents).
The House members can claim there was a fig leaf of relief for the middle class regarding SALT deductions (they only cut off one finger instead of all 5), and then the Senate version won't even let us keep that one finger. Then the Conference Committee goes with the Senate version, and the House members shrug their shoulders and say "Hey, we tried. Sorry."
I don’t believe the House will pass it as is.
Tomorrow we’ll hear of a postponement.
Kevin McCarthy has kept the CA delegation in line and so far they have not been publicly skittish.
However, tomorrow they have to cast a vote that will seal their 2018 fate. Most of them are not ready to retire.
Were not going to get real reform with this congress, the next congress, or the congress after that. The uniparty has run politics in this country since the 19th century. Theyre very good at staying in power.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
Why should corporations gave a special tax rate at all? They claim the rights of people, let them pay individual tax rates.
>>>Republicans had 7 years to come up with a plan to repeal and replace obamacare.
Actually, they ran for seven years on a platform of repeal. It was the President who ran on repeal and replace, stating he had a plan that would expand coverage and reduce prices.
The President won with a mandate and the Senate lost a few seats, so they adopted repeal and replace, but then were not able to carry through. Maybe one of these days the President will present his plan and they can try to get that passed.
“While my tax situation is not ideal and I pay far too much, I would pay a LOT more under either plan. A lot more. Thousands more every year.”
Which is EXACTLY the point.
Why am I subsidizing your outrageous state and local taxes, when you SHOULD be screaming at your locals about it, instead?
Or do you not really care, as long as it isn’t YOU paying the bill for runaway liberalism and vote-buying?
I think theyll go for it. The gop faction of the uniparty wants to make sure they lose in 2018 by all means necessary. This is a twofer: lose the election and goodies for their benefactors.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
Johnson is the designated hitter on this one so McCain doesnt have to take the heat like he did on Obamacare repeal.
He sure has.
Even when the NJ and NY Congressmen were trying to get changes to the bill that would not screw over their constituents as badly, the entire CA delegation voted for the framework bill and asked for no changes.
Sheesh.
Apparently you don't know how a Tax Deduction works. We have been over and over this issue on FR. Also, do you know why the SALT deductions were written into the Federal Tax Code in 1913? Because they recognized that it was "immoral" (their words) to force double taxation upon American citizens.
Moreover, most of the high tax states are subsidizing the low tax states - not the other way around.
“There are two versions: the House and Senate. The Senate version is even harsher on individuals in some ways, and the House has terrible flaws as well. Which one is worse is dependent on your situation and your deductions.
The House is supposed to vote on their version tomorrow. “
Its all bull shit. As long as they are talking “revenue neutral” you’ll still be paying as much or more. Unless spending on garbage is cut radically nothing chabges. Shell game.
And Trump wan't a tax Bill passed before Christmas, is a sure and certain loser; not to mention brain dead STUPID!
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
"State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress [emphases added]." Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
"The smart crooks long ago figured out that getting themselves elected to federal office to make unconstitutional tax laws to fill their pockets is a much easier way to make a living than robbing banks." me
"Federal career lawmakers probably laugh all the way to the bank to deposit bribes for putting loopholes for the rich and corporations in tax appropriations laws, Congress actually not having the express constitutional authority to make most laws where domestic policy is concerned. Such laws are based on stolen state powers and uniquely associated stolen state revenues." me
And to not only make the Section 8-compliant 1040EZ permanent, but also make Pres. Trumps vision for MAGA last many generations, patriots need to support Trump in leading the states to repeal the 16th and ill-conceived 17th Amendments (16 & 17A).
Patriots must first make sure that there are plenty of Trump-supporting candidates on the primary ballots who will commit to express-laning a ConCon for the specific purpose of repealing 16 & 17A.
For those patriots concerned about a possible overthrow of the country by a pirated ConCon, note that the product of a ConCon is never a new amendment to the Constitution, but a proposed amendment that the states can either reject or ratify.
Once 16 & 17A are repealed, and patriots support Pres. Trump in working with the states to put a stop to unconstitutional federal taxes, the states will probably find a tsunami of new revenues (higher state taxes) that they wont know what to do with.
For starters, they can establish their own healthcare and retirement programs, increase funding for public schools, police and fire departments, and repair infrastructure, ultimately depending on what the legal majority voters of a given state want.
Also consider that repealing 16 & 17A will also effectively secede the states from the unconstitutionally big federal government imo. (Are you listening Gov. Brown?)
Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!
Hes just the fall guy. Itll be someone else next time to take a principled stance against the next bill.
Politics is a scam and were suckers for playing.
Then I hope that this Bill sinks like a stone and to hell with the tax INCREASE for many, whilst the BIG corporations win, win, W-I-N big!
Bovine ecrement. If you have been “over it and over it”, you know that this has no to very little effect on the average wageearner.
It DOES effect high wage earners, and more importantly BIG SPENDERS in HIGH TAX states.
Try using an ancient, magical concept that was considered racist for the last decade, called...
MATH...
It will never lie to you, and it will always give you the correct answer.
