The UCLA basketball team is heading home to Los Angeles from China without star freshman LiAngelo Ball, who is accused of shoplifting and is being detained. And it may be a while before Ball rejoins them, as new evidence in his case has surfaced.
ESPN is reporting that there is surveillance footage of Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen players Jalen Hill and Cody Riley shoplifting from three stores inside a retail center near the team hotel in Hangzhou, China. The players have spoken with police and are currently confined to their hotel while the investigation continues.
Chinas justice system moves slowly, but its conviction rates are high (as in 99 percent for shoplifting offenses) and the penalties are often stiff. In this case, the players could face up to 10 years in prison.
However, ESPN claims that the situation will likely take a week or two to be resolved. Ball is part of the fabled basketball family that includes father LaVar (whose Ball in the Family reality show airs on Facebook and who is regularly parodied by Kenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live); Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball; and high school basketball sensation LaMelo Ball, who is already committed to UCLA.

Fabled basketball family??
His U.S. Race Card is not honored in China.
The black privilege race card doesn’t work in China...
However, other major credit cards are accepted.
I sure hope the Chinese don’t take the bride money and instead lock up these thugs for the maximum including hard labor.
LiAngelo Ball, LaVar Ball, Lonzo Ball, LaMelo Ball.
Hmmm. Not sure. Could be wrong. But I might be seeing a pattern here.
Let me check my handbook of Made-up Names.
Why are these scumbags still on the team?
Funny how even a godless nation can enforce its laws against non-nationals.
Apparently you haven't been watching sports for some time.
Did you know CA decriminalized shoplifting last year. That might give you a clue. :-(
Please keep him
BTW, I’m sorry if my reply sounded snarky. I didn’t mean it to be. Only way I’ll be amazed is if UCLA cuts them loose.
The guys should be able to speak fluent Chinese by the time they get back.
One of them is now LockedupBall.
However, being famous trumps all, so to speak.
Daddy Ball may need to get Kobe out to China to testify on these kids behalf if they want to see them before the next decade begins.
That, and a few shekels might help get them out.
This is still China after all.
LOL! There was a great one I saw during a college football game.... Equanimeous.
Every team member should be required to read John Wooden’s “A game plan for life.” Assuming, of course, they can read.
Ah, but supposedly blacks are oppressed in the US. Send him to North Korea so he can see true oppression.
