Iran-Iraq earthquake kills at least 61, injures more than 300

At least 61 people were killed and more than 300 others were hurt in a powerful earthquake on the Iran-Iraq border region Sunday, Iranian officials revealed.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.3, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced, as reports of serious structural damage started to emerge. At least six of the deaths were on Iraq's side of the border, Iranian state media reported.

On its website, the USGS placed the quake's epicenter at about 18.6 miles southwest of the Iraqi city of Halabja.

The USGS also issued an "orange" alert for "shaking-related fatalities and economic losses."

I heard an update on the radio a few minutes ago saying 140 were confirmed dead.

I only see a 5.8 off Japan, whch is not too unusual, and which was masked on the seismographs by the 7.3 on the Iran-Iraq border and the 6.5 in Costa Rica.

Take a look: the MAJO (Matsushiro) seismogram in Japan is pretty well swamped by those bigger shocks...

One of the online English rags was trumpeting the “huge” (their word) 5.8 near Japan — and then about 90% of the article was about other earthquakes — mainly past temblors in or near Japan.

The average Japanese citizen who felt anything probably paused just long enough for the quake to begin dropping in intensity, and then went about their business.

The media is sinking ever lower...

That’s awful. Many were killed at malls and supermarkets. Women, children, elderly...just going about their daily routine, like you and I. I am ashamed at all the FReepers who are rejoicing about the deaths of 500 people in an earthquake.
